Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[Salieri jolts at that, startled, smacking his head on the lid in the process and unfortunately knocking it off it's stand, so he has to frantically grab it so it doesn't fall down on his hand.

Once he's sure it's steady, though, he'll glance over at the Balladeer]

Ah...[oh yes. The Narrator.] ...that is, yes. I would appreciate some assistance, if you wouldn't mind helping me remove it.

[Yikes! The Balladeer winces. He didn't know there was a slapstick element at play here.]

Sure. I got started on tuning up all the other strings yesterday, but I've never actually gotten the chance to work with a piano. Not too portable.

[Despite that, he moves to help as if he does know how this works.]

[unfortunately, Salieri's mun loves slapstick and will apply it whenever appropriate. But, luckily for him and with the Balladeer's help, the piano lid will come off it's hinges easily, once the pins are taken out.]

Ah, true enough. This particular fortepiano is a bit larger than I'm used to, admittedly, and the tuning is different as well from what I'm used to. There are so many more tools. [he gives said tools, sitting on a chair next to the piano, a wry look]

The ones I see are usually about this size. Sometimes just standing ones, if there's not enough space.

[That done, he remains by the piano, apparently interested in watching Salieri work.]

But I've never had my own. I'd have to wheel it across the stage or something.

[Salieri is honestly just Doing His Best at this point, going back and forth between the tools for tuning and the tuning fork inside the kit itself. He does pause to glance at the Balladeer briefly, though]

That does sound a bit troublesome. I don't know that that is a feat I would ever want to attempt. At least you have rather easy access to one at the moment.

Yeah! I'll have to see if I actually know how to play it sometime. I feel like I would.

[Salieri considers that as he checks the pitch on one of the strings]

Well, if you'd like, I am almost finished tuning this one. You are welcome to try it out.

Oh! Sure, thanks!

[He'll, like, wait until you're done, though. Once everything's finished, though, and presumably they've put the lid back in its place, the Balladeer will sit down to play. He's a little tentative putting his fingers on the keys - while he's played a variety of instruments in the show, this is pretty different from all of them. Still, he finds a position easily enough, and after testing a few notes, he plays a little bit of this. Ah, that's familiar. He could've done that.

...then, struck with a sudden temptation, he lapses into something else.]

He said, "Son, can you play me a memory?
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad, and it's sweet, and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."

[Salieri will stand by the lid, watching the Balladeer settle at the keys, curious. He plays through first one melody, then switches to the next...neither of which Salieri recognizes. But they're...nice melodies.]

...I'm afraid I don't recognize either of those tunes. However, it does seem that you can, indeed, play the piano.

Looks like!

[He grins, dropping his hands from the keys for the moment.]

I've always been good with strings, but I wasn't sure it would carry over. Kinda a different beast, from a guitar or something like that.

[there's a hint of amusement in his expression at that]

No, I should say that the guitar is quite different from the fortepiano. Entirely different sounds, even.

[He chuckles and rises.]

Just a little bit. I wonder if I can play anything else I haven't tried yet?

[violentenvies]

By all means. [Salieri turns a bit, sweeping his arm out in front of him towards the array of instruments]

You're certainly spoiled for choice, here.

That's true.

[The Balladeer shrugs, and wanders over to pick up an oboe at random. The difference is immediately palpable; he's not exactly sure how to hold it, or what he ought to do with his mouth. He does not know how to play this. But he gamely imitates what he's seen and makes an attempt anyhow. It's a horrible doot.]

Well, that makes sense. I'm supposed to be singing during all my appearances, I could never do something like this.

[He'll wince a little at the unpleasant note]

It was worth a try, at least. Do you think that rules out all other instruments that are played that way, or perhaps one of them might work?

I mean, I'm willing to try anything, but that might not be fun for anyone else on the hallway.

[He suspects he won't have much more success with anything else. At least, nothing you can't sing while playing.]

Oh, I should try the drums!

[Salieri folds his arms over his chest, leaning a bit on the piano, looking mildly bemused now]

Certainly. Percussion is certainly a necessary variety of instruments in its own right.

[this is kind of just...adorable almost. After all, what's the harm? The instruments are fine, and seeing someone experiment with such things without any trepidation is almost refreshing.]

[He is quite un-self-conscious about it! If anything, he's just excited for the opportunity to try out some new things - he bounds over to the drum set and settles down. There is, for the record, a drum set like this in here.]

Yeah, you need the drums. We never had a set like this, though - this is sort of...more of a rock music thing?

[Tap tap tap on one of the center drums. Drumming is a naturally loud activity, but hes at least trying not to be obnoxious about it. He doesn't seem to have a preternatural gift for this, either, but he does at least have a good sense of rhythm! Just not too clear on the differences between all the drums - he taps on a different one.]

Not that other Broadway shows don't use them.

[he'll arch an eyebrow at that, noting the rather solid sense of rhythm, even if he's clearly not entirely sure of himself on the instrument]

Pardon...what kind of shows?

Broadway. New York City. It's where "prestigious musical theatre" happens in America.

[He pauses messing with the drums to throw in the air quotes. Look, there's no need to get up on any high horse about Broadway.]

[....huh]

...I suspect that might be something past my time. It was in the Americas, you said?

Yeah. What year are you from?

[This time stuff is pretty standard for him, he gets it. Just harder to tell when everyone's in these school uniforms.]

1732. I'm aware that some here are at least a century or two apart from that, however.

Oh. Wow.

[That's a long ways back!]

Yeah. The earliest I can go is 1865. [.....] So, like forty years from you, America declared independence and became its own country. I could go into it but I'm not....really a rapper.

[He will not be white-man-rapping Hamilton, thanks]

Did it really?

[he has no idea what a rapper is, and at this point he's too afraid to ask if it has anything to do with these "revolutions"] I...was informed of several revolutions that happened just after my time. Some of them sound rather bloody.
