Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[Salieri folds his arms over his chest, leaning a bit on the piano, looking mildly bemused now]

Certainly. Percussion is certainly a necessary variety of instruments in its own right.

[this is kind of just...adorable almost. After all, what's the harm? The instruments are fine, and seeing someone experiment with such things without any trepidation is almost refreshing.]

[He is quite un-self-conscious about it! If anything, he's just excited for the opportunity to try out some new things - he bounds over to the drum set and settles down. There is, for the record, a drum set like this in here.]

Yeah, you need the drums. We never had a set like this, though - this is sort of...more of a rock music thing?

[Tap tap tap on one of the center drums. Drumming is a naturally loud activity, but hes at least trying not to be obnoxious about it. He doesn't seem to have a preternatural gift for this, either, but he does at least have a good sense of rhythm! Just not too clear on the differences between all the drums - he taps on a different one.]

Not that other Broadway shows don't use them.

[he'll arch an eyebrow at that, noting the rather solid sense of rhythm, even if he's clearly not entirely sure of himself on the instrument]

Pardon...what kind of shows?

Broadway. New York City. It's where "prestigious musical theatre" happens in America.

[He pauses messing with the drums to throw in the air quotes. Look, there's no need to get up on any high horse about Broadway.]

...I suspect that might be something past my time. It was in the Americas, you said?

Yeah. What year are you from?

[This time stuff is pretty standard for him, he gets it. Just harder to tell when everyone's in these school uniforms.]

1732. I'm aware that some here are at least a century or two apart from that, however.

Oh. Wow.

[That's a long ways back!]

Yeah. The earliest I can go is 1865. [.....] So, like forty years from you, America declared independence and became its own country. I could go into it but I'm not....really a rapper.

[He will not be white-man-rapping Hamilton, thanks]

Did it really?

[he has no idea what a rapper is, and at this point he's too afraid to ask if it has anything to do with these "revolutions"] I...was informed of several revolutions that happened just after my time. Some of them sound rather bloody.

Oh, yeah. The world turned upside-down...

[That bit's not rap! The Balladeer phases pretty naturally from speech to song, and back to speech:]

All before my time, though. There's someone in my upcoming cast who lived through a lot of it, though - I was looking forward to talking to her.

Your...upcoming cast? [hm????]

Yeah, for my next show. I sort of...left my original one.

[Which he seems to feel a little odd about, if not regretful.]

I don't think that can even normally happen, but apparently I was wanted for something else, so...

This entire situations seems to be full of things that don't normally happen. [he drums his fingers on the piano lid for a moment] What is your next show about?

Well, the premise is pretty much the same as this one. I'm hoping we'll be able to just have a quick little character drama, no harm done.

[You know: no murder!]

I beg your pardon...it's the same as this one? [that will earn the Balladeer a bit of a frown]

That is, people trapped like this?

[tellthestory]

Yeah, basically the same premise. Didn't have the school theme, though. That's a little weird.

[violentenvies]

I...see. I find it quite weird, yes. The situation on the whole, but that is a large factor of it. [he glances down at his uniform with something like distaste.

[tellthestory]

Yeah. I'm not a fan of the uniforms - it makes a little bit of sense, but it doesn't really suit everyone.

[If it were really a school full of kids, that might be one thing, but he'd think in this case you'd want to differentiate the costumes a little more.]

We had this great old opera house. Huge place.

[violentenvies]

An opera house? Really? [huh...] And what happened there, exactly?

Before? I don't know...it could be a recycled setting from something else, but it could just be new, too.

[....huh]

...how very strange. [he says, like the Balladeer's whole existence isn't incredibly strange to him] How many different shows are you aware that you are in or have been in?

[tellthestory]

Just the one - my new one never really started.

[You know, before the kidnapping.]

Plenty of different times, of course. Different nights, productions, all that.

Interesting. So you just...repeated the same story over and over again?

[tellthestory]

Pretty much. Or, the same three or so - it was sort of like a revue, so my scenes weren't super connected, narratively.

[Earlier, the Balladeer had said that he had never really had much choice. Hearing more about his shows now furthers how unsettled it makes Salieri feel. To be trapped doing the same thing, over and over again, with no way out...it sounds horrifying.

But Salieri isn't going to touch on that just yet. It would be rude to say so, even, so he'll just...gently steer the situation another way]

I see. Then such a situation as this must be something of a dramatic change.
