Week Three

[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

[ Weird... But, well, okay. ]

So...did you get anything from it? Like— okay, the stories are all like, you're strong, you're quick, you're...in a really bad adaptation of a good book series. [ Fuck the Lightning Thief movie, amiright— ] But— you haven't talked about any...abilities, like the others, that you don't have anymore.

[ Thankfully Orpheus gets distracted by Peregrine's question before he can question that middle part too hard and we have to dwell on the fucking Lightning Thief movie any longer than necessary. ]

Oh! There's a couple of things, I guess? Mostly animals really like it when I sing or play instruments, and if I try really hard I can make rocks move around a little? I can also make plants grow a little sometimes. That still works? I managed to get the little potted tree in the lobby to flower on our first day here.

[ You know, the ficus. The one that's absolutely made of plastic but that also definitely has little white flowers all over it now and didn't at the start of all this. ]

I don't know about the rest, though. There aren't really rocks or that many animals around to try it on.

[ Peregrine nods slowly. She just— ]

So... You're like a Disney princess.

A what? [ asks Orpheus, wholly oblivious, again. ]

Oh, jeez— uhhh, it's a movie thing? Do you have movies? [ It's also an Elsa thing but ohhh she is NOT going to get into that, especially since Elsa seems...older than in Frozen, a movie she saw once in theaters, thought was alright, and then suddenly could never watch again for some obvious reasons. Anyway, was there ever a sequel? Disney used to do those, right? Not important— ]

They're like...a big company and they make movies about princesses who have adventures and all the animals love them, and they sing beautifully, and that's you.

Oh! They're the ones that make the cartoons about the mouse and his friends, right? I've seen one of those. I didn't know about the princess thing, though. That's neat! Maybe I'll see about going to the movies again with Eurydice, when we go back home. We'd have to find a town with a theater, but it might be fun.

But— wait, what year is it for you?!

Right, that's his name. And it's 678.3, but I don't think I count the years the same as the rest of you? Um. When I talked to Elisabeth about it, she said it was eighteen fiftysomething for her, but that the United States had only been founded 80 years ago, when it had been a little over 150 for me.

[ He'd told her this before, hadn't he? But that couldn't be right, it couldn't— ]

150 years? That's... Oh, man, when was the United States... [ There was a movie about it, right? Like multiple ones. Peregrine starts murmuring to herself. ]

Mary Silliman’s War, The Patriot, Johnny Tremain, April Morning, John Adams— [ And then it hits her, and she blurts out: ] 1776!!

It was 1776!!

[ Orpheus looks at her blankly as she rattles off all those names that mean almost nothing to him before reaching what she's looking for. ]

Right, I think that's what Elisabeth said too? But it was founded in 638.3 where I come from. I don't really know what's going on with that? It's strange.

Right, but— okay, I have a theory, right? So, your years are different...but if you know Disney, there have to be some things in common here. So, if America was founded 150 years ago for you...and that was 1776 for me, then that'd be... 1920s? Ugh, I wish I knew more about when they started showing cartoons before movies, but we usually didn't watch ones from that long ago...

[ Orpheus nods. ]

The 150 year celebration happened when I was around twelve, so it'd be more like... 1930, for you? If you count straight instead of the years going in cycles.

[ She nods, keeps nodding. ] Mid 1930s. There were... I think think movies were starting to become more, you know, widespread then? At least— there were theaters, and stuff, oh, maybe they'd have something in the history section of the library.

[ It's a puzzle and she wants to figure it out. ]

Right, I didn't hear much about them until I was a teenager, and the only time I got to see one was when I was visiting one of the big cities. A friend took a bunch of us to see one.

[ And he'd sort of been too nervous about the upcoming Boat Quest to pay much attention to it, unfortunately. ]

But maybe! We can go check, after you're done sorting this stuff. I can help, if you want? I'm not doing anything right now.

Yeah! [ Oh, she doesn't have that much stuff— ] Lemme just get it back to the dorms and...yeah, let's do it.

[ Peregrine nods, gathering up her things. Honestly, this is exciting. She's excited!!!

And she'll meet Orpheus in the library, to dig through literally every nonfiction book until she can find one about or with a section on film history. ]

Okay, so we're probably not going to find a section on it, but at least if we look through nonfiction there'll be something. Probably in the textbooks area. Maybe there's a miscellaneous area—

[ She is just. Going to keep talking to herself and to Orpheus if he cares to listen but it's 100% mostly to get her thoughts out. It's sort of in the same way she gets when she talks about survivalism, so. Good luck getting her to stop? ]

[ Orpheus just kind of smiles and nods, because he doesn't really understand how libraries are organized or what might be found in them other than what he's managed to stumble across on his own. He'll let Peregrine go on for a while, tuning out for... probably more of it than he should, until there's a gap in conversation where he can slip back in. ]

This is the most books I've seen in one place in a really long time. [ he says, about this tiny school library. ] I'm sure we can find what we're looking for somewhere.

[ Without missing a beat: ]

You'd be surprised. Some places don't have really specialized books in certain areas. It depends, but, if this place is modeled after a really fancy private school—like this is like three times the size of the library back in Whitetail High School, but like, we've got less than a hundred kids, so if you want something focusing on like, anything they don't have an elective for? You gotta special order it through the librarian and that's just a pain. They always ask, "Oh, now, why's someone your age lookin into something like that, now, don'tcha know, you can find just as much at the pamphlets at the Forest Center"—

[ She has, for the record, exaggerated her own accent to a ridiculous extent.

Peregrine rolls her eyes. ]

Anyway. We won't run into that here, I don't think. [ As she's tapping on various book spines, skimming the shelves. ]

I guess that's happened to you a couple of times? [ Sounds like it, from the way she talks and how she sounds like she's quoting or paraphrasing someone there.

In any case, Orpheus pulls an encyclopedia off the shelf and begins to flip through it, rather than... looking at the index, or anything. He's... doing his best. ]

What exactly are we looking for?

Only too many times to count.

[ Peregrine grumbles as she's looking through. ]

I...am not sure. ...Could you maybe— [ She looks up at him flipping through the encyclopedia. Oh, Orpheus... ] New idea. You figured out how to work a computer? See if one of the ones up front's got a search feature. Just...enter the word film.

[themuseabandonsyou]

Oh, okay. [ says Orpheus, putting the encyclopedia back on the shelf and giving the computer a slightly hesitant glance. ] I... think I can do that?

[ Probably! He's watched the others use the computers by now, he thinks he can figure it out. He heads on over and gives it a look, and mercifully it's already turned on and set to the library's index page. It takes him a while to hunt-and-peck the word film into the search bar, but he does it.

And then he stands there, not knowing that he has to hit enter to make it go. ]

Now what? [ he calls over to Peregrine once it becomes clear that the computer isn't doing anything. ]

[ ... ]

Is it bringing anything up...?

No! I'm just looking at the word 'film' in a long rectangular box. What do I do now?

[ look Peregrine Orpheus isn't even a boomer he's technically greatest generation or something, you're gonna have to give him a bit ]
