[Six weeks later, and eleven performers remain.

The opera house is much the same when Monday morning dawns this week. It seems you've truly gone as high as you can go - there is no fifth floor, and no sign of any other new areas. The air has grown colder, like perhaps someone failed to adjust the heating for the winter weather that's supposedly happening just outside. Javert and Astarte's stars are still firmly affixed to their doors; it seems you might have to try a little harder to learn their secrets.

I'll never understand how you can do all that with just what we have here.

[ Hans shrugs. ]

Well, besides talking to the Balladeer, I've been spending time in the art studio, or well, here. [ At the bar. ] I can't make sense of those other rooms, anyway.

Yeah, well, I'm an MIT scientist that's used to working with a Home Depot budget, so I guess I get by. I've only really made my laser, but I can't get it hot enough to actually do much more than heat and melt low-melting-point metals. Makes it useful for welding, anyway.

...What's to make sense of? It's pretty easy to figure out how things work, even if you can't take them apart to make other things.

[ That all sounds very impressive except that it means nothing to him... ]

We didn't have electricity where I'm from, Billy. Take the Recording Studio, for instance. What's to record? Where does the sound go? I may have figured out how to work those smoke machines but not everything just works based on an on/off switch.

Of course you had electricity, it's a force of nature. In 1752 Benjamin Franklin discovered that lightning was a natural form of electricity by flying a kite with a key tied to it during a thunderstorm. The Greeks discovered static electricity by rubbing amber against wool. The French physicist Coulomb died in 1806 and his calculations for measuring electricity are still a cornerstone of modern physics.

Maybe in your world that was true, but we were still using lanterns and chandeliers where I'm from.

[ Then again Arendelle is anachronistic stew so who knows? ]

Well, yeah, lights weren't electric until I think the 1900s? But electricity has always existed.

Anyway, aren't you even curious?

[ Hans sighs. ]

I mean, sure I'm curious, but I'm not going to just press buttons at random. I might break something.

So what if you break something?

[No, this is a legit question. He takes a sip of cola with interest.]

[ Duh. ]

Well, yeah, but you'll have learned something about how it worked.

[Bruh he's been taking shit apart for weeks now do you really think he cares about whether the original is still useable?]

Just, you know, stick to things that people don't use every day.

[like maybe don't break anything in the bathroom or the kitchen.]

Is that you do? Break things until you figure out how they work?

That's what I used to do when I was still learning, yeah. Now - with stuff that's kind of advanced for the late-aughties - I can usually look at it in action and then take a peek inside and be able to get a sense for how it works.

[He nurses his cola and stares at the bar.]

I really want to get my hands on whatever it was that they used to bring us all here.

I guess that makes sense.

You think it was some kind of machine? Not magic?

It has to be. There's no such thing as magic.

Uh, yeah. Elsa's the Queen of Arendelle.

[Duh.

Also he has to impress Elsa in order to be allowed to date Anna]

Right. And she has magical powers.

[Pardon the deadpan.]

She can create ice and brought an overnight winter to her kingdom.

[ That's magic, bro. ]

...So? That's not magic, that's superpowers.

[Duh.]

[ Hans kind of just stares. ]

So. Magic.

I know a guy who says he can do things like that.

[trettende]

She's a lot more dangerous than just some guy.

Uh, he froze the entire city's water supply.

...And wanted me to fight him in a park. With kids in it.

Picture that, in an entire kingdom, and with about five feet of snow, overnight.

Trust me, Elsa's magic almost froze her kingdom solid. It's magic.
