Week Three

[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

[ Peregrine looks up from what she's mixing. ]

...I shoulda known. [ She sighs, very heavily. ] Yeah, okay. Gimme it and I'll find something to do with it.

[SORRY PER...Varian smiles weakly before disappearing for a second, returning shortly after with yet another deer skin for her troubles. It's about the same as all of the rest. Very deer, much skin.]

I reeeally don't like how many of these things there are...

[ She sighs. ]

I'd like it more if I had the right tools to smoke 'em. I could actually work the leather properly, like that.

Oh- you know how to make them into leather?

[I mean, it makes sense. Peregrine is the resident deer whisperer here. Well, except for Janis and Will, but he's a special (much more plastic) case.]

Oh, yeah. It's a really valuable resource. You gotta use every part of the animal if you're hunting, or else it's wasteful, and leather? You can make rawhide, you can make coats...

[alchemistake]

That's really impressive. I don't know a lot about hunting, but my dad does need to use a lot of heavy duty leather stuff when he's working out on the farm.

Do you think I could see it when you're done?

Oh, uh... Sure, if you really want.

[ After a moment, she clarifies: ]

I can't properly treat 'em without being able to smoke the hides, so the closest to done they'll be able to get is white deer leather, but, I mean, if you're okay with it being incomplete.

I don't mind at all. I mean, this is the first time I've ever gotten to see the process first hand.

Other than the smoking, it must involve a lot of chemicals, right?

Well— if you're using the tanning solutions they sell in stores. But it's actually kinda easy to make ones on your own? [ She gestures to the multiple mixtures she has on the counter. ] Like, this one's just egg yolks and mayonnaise. And I was able to make one with bar soap shavings and a bit of oil— that's required a lot of extra soaking, though, and I'm not sure how good it'll turn out, so that's why I'm trying others— the white vinegar one I'm looking forward to testing, but Howl said that one needs to soak for three days, so I'm gonna use a few different techniques.

[ She just. Rambles all this out. ]

[Okay, wow. Color him impressed.]

You can do something like that with...egg yolks and mayonnaise?

[Sounds more like you're prepping for a barbeque-]

Tanning's an old and versatile process. People've been doing it for hundreds of years. Some have been making tanning solution from the brain of the hunted animal.

...Ewwww, that's so cool.

I love hearing about ingenuity like that...I mean, how are you gonna know something isn't gonna work unless you try it, right?

I wish I could just use the brains, that's how Howl taught me. But he made sure to give us other instruction too, just in case. You can't just rely on one technique, right? Gotta be versatile.

Oh yeah, definitely. I mean, knowing my luck if it were me, I'd be the guy who hunted the first known deer in the world without a brain.

[comeandfindme]

[ Oh no— Peregrine laughs. ]

At least it'd be an easy catch, right?

You say that, but just because it doesn't have a brain doesn't mean it can't run fast.

[He's teasing now, folding his arms as he looks over the work Peregrine has been doing.]

...maybe when we get out of here, I'll ask my Dad if he can teach me how to hunt. We don't really need to all that much, since we have a farm...but I think he does go out on occasion when it's necessary.

It's a good skill to have. Just...all of it, you know? Especially if you live near a forest. If your dad hasn't taught you... Well, I think that's another thing you gotta prod him about, yeah?

[alchemistake]

Yeah. I think he'd like me asking him more about the more...

[He gestures vaugely.]

Outdoorsy stuff, too. It's what he's good at. It's hard to really...bond over alchemy.

And I still think that's bullshit. [ ...But— ]

But...maybe this is what he needs. You gotta show him you're not just...a kid playing around.

[Those words definitely won't come back to haunt him Sunday morning, nope-]

...yeah. Yeah, you're right. He'd have reason to actually start taking me and my inventions seriously, then.

Exactly! [ A moment— ] That's...kind of what happened with me and my mom, actually. I showed her I was learning things that were actually helpful, that could keep me alive, and... Well, she's a lot more approving, now.

[ Things that also definitely won't come back to bite Peregrine Sunday, certainly not. ]

Why do parents have to be all like that, anyway...I know I'm not an adult yet, exactly, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing, you know?

[He makes mistakes, but adults can make mistakes too.]

I know. [ Very earnestly. ] ...But it takes them longer. They think they're protecting us, but...they're not. But, like...if my mom could come around... I bet your dad will too.

[alchemistake]

Yeah...

[Varian looks back over at the skins she'd been working on.]

Sorry, I keep...circling back around to my Dad somehow, but this kind of stuff makes me think about him.

[ She waves a hand to dismiss his worries. ]

It's on your mind. Of course it is. Especially if he's the kinda guy who...you know, does this stuff a lot.
