Week Three

[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

I wish I could just use the brains, that's how Howl taught me. But he made sure to give us other instruction too, just in case. You can't just rely on one technique, right? Gotta be versatile.

Oh yeah, definitely. I mean, knowing my luck if it were me, I'd be the guy who hunted the first known deer in the world without a brain.

[ Oh no— Peregrine laughs. ]

You say that, but just because it doesn't have a brain doesn't mean it can't run fast.

[He's teasing now, folding his arms as he looks over the work Peregrine has been doing.]

...maybe when we get out of here, I'll ask my Dad if he can teach me how to hunt. We don't really need to all that much, since we have a farm...but I think he does go out on occasion when it's necessary.

It's a good skill to have. Just...all of it, you know? Especially if you live near a forest. If your dad hasn't taught you... Well, I think that's another thing you gotta prod him about, yeah?

Yeah. I think he'd like me asking him more about the more...

[He gestures vaugely.]

Outdoorsy stuff, too. It's what he's good at. It's hard to really...bond over alchemy.

And I still think that's bullshit. [ ...But— ]

But...maybe this is what he needs. You gotta show him you're not just...a kid playing around.

...yeah. Yeah, you're right. He'd have reason to actually start taking me and my inventions seriously, then.

Exactly! [ A moment— ] That's...kind of what happened with me and my mom, actually. I showed her I was learning things that were actually helpful, that could keep me alive, and... Well, she's a lot more approving, now.

[ Things that also definitely won't come back to bite Peregrine Sunday, certainly not. ]

Why do parents have to be all like that, anyway...I know I'm not an adult yet, exactly, but that doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing, you know?

[He makes mistakes, but adults can make mistakes too.]

I know. [ Very earnestly. ] ...But it takes them longer. They think they're protecting us, but...they're not. But, like...if my mom could come around... I bet your dad will too.

[alchemistake]

Yeah...

[Varian looks back over at the skins she'd been working on.]

Sorry, I keep...circling back around to my Dad somehow, but this kind of stuff makes me think about him.

[ She waves a hand to dismiss his worries. ]

It's on your mind. Of course it is. Especially if he's the kinda guy who...you know, does this stuff a lot.

Yeah...

[YEAH...]

Things were kindof...not great between us, last I remember. I mean, we aren't on bad terms or anything...I just keep messing up. I know I've disappointed him a lot...

[He rubs the back of his neck.]

I don't like thinking about how that's the last thing I can remember, with Dad...

Don't talk like that. He's the one who's disappointing you. You're his son, he should understand.

[alchemistake]

[He's the one disappointing you...]

Yeah...no, you're right.

I just think he wasn't expecting his son to grow up...different.

...Hey.

[ Peregrine steps away from her various mixtures, puts a firm hand on Varian's shoulder. ]

There's nothing wrong with you. You know that, right?

[alchemistake]

[Varian hesitates, and for a moment he actually looks unsure. Like maybe he doesn't know.]

I- n-no, yeah! Yeah. I know. It's just uh...gonna take some time for people to warm up to my ideas, is all.

[comeandfindme]

[ She gives him a strong, firm look. ]

Exactly. So never forget...you're doing amazing things.
