itscurtains | Week Three

[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

[Varian had been looking at some of the volumes in the Library, making mental notes on some things he might want to take for himself for a bit for evening reading when he isn't overloading himself on work. He hears the sound of someone talking past one of the shelves, though, and...it doesn't sound like any voice he recognizes, which is alarming for more than one reason.

He's quick to come skidding into view, only to see Spongebob sitting in on eof the corners watching the Magic School Bus. And while that on it's own should pique Varian's interest, it's what he's seeing in general that's left him speechless.]

What...is that?

[Spongbob waves at Varian as he takes a break from eating a giant back of chips.]

I think it's called the Magic School Bus? It's a really fun cartoon!

Magic- no, not that- well, yes that, but that's my second question-

[What's a cartoon is his third]

I'm talking about that machine!

[He gestures to the TV itself, looking equal parts amazed and utterly bewildered.]

[He blinks and looks at the TV for a moment, before it clicks.]

Oh! You've never heard of TV before? They're great! I don't really know how it works but it's this machine that can let you watch shows, or, I guess plays, you probably don't know what a show is right, to this screen and you can watch it! Either live or prerecorded! It's probably one of the best inventions ever invented!

[Varian is wandering closer as Spongebob talks, careful not to stand in front of him as he examines the box. He wants to actuall open it up to look at the inner workings, but he doesn't want to mess up what Spongebob is doing. Still, though...]

Shows...

[He leans over to look at the screen, eyes widening a bit more as he sees the actual pictures moving on it. He's maybe a little too close.]

So this runs on electricity, and...some sort of image is being projected onto the screen. The sound is coming out through here- [Indicating the speakers.] -and...

[Sorry Spongebob, he got off on a little tangent talking to himself.]

But what's on this....those look like drawings, not actual people.

Yeah that's pretty much how he works! [He thinks.]

Oh, that's because this is the cartoon, the actual greatest invention of all time! These people draw a loooot of little cartoons and combine them to make it look like they're moving; it's high art!

[This episode is about Miss Frizzle taking the kids through the digestion system!]

[That explanation...is actually quite a good one, good job Spongebob. And because of that, Varian is going to sink into a sit nearby to watch, his eyes wide with wonder.]

Wow...high art, huh...

[He's still more interested in the projector- the TV- itself, but he figures there will be a time for him to study it properly when Spongebob isn't using it.]

What is this cartoon about?

Oh it's great! It's about this teacher who takes her class on these field trips, but they're these great adventures! And it's educational! I think you'd like it since you like science-y stuff.

[He gestures to a seat next to him at the table. Join him!]

[Join him he shall! His brows raise immediately at the mention of science-y stuff.]

Science? Okay, now this I gotta see.

[Get ready to have your mind further blown by the Wonders of Modern Technology, Varian.]

I was going to look through the books, but this is a lot more interesting.

Right? I don't know why all schools don't teach like this!

[Time to learn the wonders of technology!]

[Even though Mrs. Frizzle is taking her kids inside of the human body, Varian doesn't seem at all put-off by the subject matter. If anything, he's even more curious...]

There's still a whole lot we don't know about how people work, back home. You think all of this information is accurate?

[He lives in a time period where things like x-rays don't exist. If you wanted to study somebody, you had to. Uh.

Be more practical.]

Dunno, this is my first time really learning about the human body! But if it's anything like the show's I saw as a kid, I'd say educational shows are pretty accurate.

[I would have written "except for the magical buses" but... would Not be Shocked if that was a thing on Spongebob.]

[Honestly I would believe it.

Varian sits back in his seat a little more as he watches the episode unfold. Seems they're making their way through the digestive tract. Ew. But also neat.]

You know, as much as I don't like being here against my will...I'd be lying if I said it hasn't taught me a lot of things I couldn't have possibly known about otherwise.

Yeah, if you take out the fear of death this would be a really fun summer vacation! Getting able to meet new friends, do fun activities, learn things, it's almost like summer camp! It's just missing the campfires and the constant bug bites

[Varian laughs at that idea, in spite of himself.]

You know, I've never actually been camping before. My dad and I do a lot of stuff outdoors, but I always preferred to be working on my inventions and stuff inside, you know?

Oh camping is a blast! I love singing around the campfire and telling spooky stories and s'mo-

[Something hits him as he gasps in shock.]

Wait a minute have you never had s'mores before?

[Varian blinks, tilting his head a bit because...]

I have neeever heard of that. What's a...s'more?

It's only the best dessert ever! You toast a marshmallow over an open fire, then sandwich it between graham crackers with a piece of chocolate in the middle! It's absolutely amazing!

[A thought pops up.]

We should try making some right now!

W- right now?

[Varian blinks, laughing a little.]

Where are we going to get an open fire?

[He's still a little hesitant about starting fires since...THE INCIDENT with Orpheus...]

I guess we could try starting one in the cafeteria!

[... Yeah this might not be a good idea.]

[Varian looks immediately concerned, putting up his hands.]

Is there...a different way to make a s'more without a fire? Maybe just heating it up on the stove would work?
