Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

Costume Room

[alchemistake]

[Varian hasn't checked back in with Maya since...what happened on Monday, so he's hard pressed to pass up that chance when he comes across her in the costume room while he's grabbing some supplies for himself. A few thumbtacks and some measuring tape, more than a bit different compared to the leotard she picks up.

Varian returns to a stand just in time for one of the articles of clothing she tossed to slap him right in the face. He stands there for a moment, huffing, but takes it in stride as he pulls it off with a weak chuckle.]

[Maya startles at the sound, whirling around with a startled expression. When she recognizes Varian, it's quick to smooth out into something placid, and she shrugs off her own surprise quickly enough.]

I did. [She holds up the leotard, admiring its hue. It's not quite the indigo she used to wear, but it'll do.] I didn't realize you were behind me -- I would have been far more careful.

[Or not made a mess in the first place.]

[alchemistake]

Naah, it's fine. I was just looking to grab some stuff to measure with anyway.

[Which he's found, and indicates by giving the tape measure in his hand a little wiggle.]

What do you need that for, though? Something happen to your other clothes?

[He's not the biggest fan of the uniform himself- he misses his frock and vest and goggles especially- but it's servicable, for now.]

[mayavericks]

[She nods, making a mental note of the tools. She'll ask after their necessity later.]

No, they're just fine. [She's used to wearing uniforms, even if it does feel wrong to not be wearing something from Seisho.]

But I can't easily practice in them. I need to be able to move fluidly. That's what this is for.

[alchemistake]

[Practice? Well, consider his curiosity piqued.]

So you're a dancer?

[He doesn't know much about dancing himself- he's a singing, playing music type of theater kid- but if there's one thing that Corona is famous for, it's the big festivals Rapunzel likes to hold with lots of dancing in the streets. You kindof can't avoid them, much less avoid hearing about them.]

[mayavericks]

A performer. A stage girl. [She bows with a little flourish.]

The stage has been my home for as long as I can remember. I cannot imagine a life without song or dance.

[alchemistake]

Oh, a stage girl, pardon me.

[It's said in jest with a smile, because honestly? He's impressed.]

Well I hope you don't mind if I sit in on your practice sometime. I'm not really a dancer...at all, so it'd be interesting to see.

[mayavericks]

I never mind an audience. It helps me prepare for the stage all the more.

[Though, since she's here, she does hold out a hand to him.]

On the other hand... I am an excellent teacher, if you are interested in learning.

[alchemistake]

Oh- me? Dance? Well, I don't...uhh...

[Oh boy there he goes getting yeeted immediately out of his comfort zone. But, well...this wouldn't be the first time someone's taught him, here. Between the Balladeer and Maya, Varian might become a much more well-rounded person who can do more things than invent and play the piano.

So even though he's a little unsure, he will carefully take her hand in his.]

I really don't want to accidentally step on your feet.

[mayavericks]

[Carefully, she extends both of their hands into proper position. She guides his opposite hand to her hip, and then places hers over his shoulder. Carefully she coaxes him into the first step.]

Now, shoulders back and stand up tall
And do not walk, but try to float

bangs my fists on the table SINGING, YES

[alchemistake]

[Varian allows Maya to guide him, immediately adopting an expression of "oh god what did I get myself into", but it's already too late the lesson has started!!

He'll follow her lead, taking said step despite visibly wobbling back on his heels a bit.]

I feel a little foolish
Am I floating?

[mayavericks]

Like a little boat!

[There's a laugh in her voice that almost disrupts her singing, but there's no judgement in her expression. She uses the hand against his shoulder to steady him, straightening his back for him.]

[alchemistake]

[Once the first step is taken, it's a bit easier to fall into a rhythm. It's just like Mumble said- one big ol' step in front of the other.]

I give a bow- er, maybe not now-

[He spoke too soon, catch him almost falling over again MAYA HE'S SORRY HE SUCKS]

What happens now?

[mayavericks]

[That's fine. Maya covers for him, catching him mid-fall as if she had intended to dip him. She reaches for his hand and moves it up to her mouth, but doesn't actually make contact. That'd probably be weird.]

Your hand receives a kiss!

[She lifts him back up, straightening Varian once more and moving, just a little slower.]

Most of all remember this:
If I can learn to do it, you can learn to do it.

[alchemistake]

[Varian grins, appreciative that Maya is a lot more on the ball with this dancing thing than he is. Now that he's upright again, he can't help but laugh breathlessly, transitioning from song to speech as easy as if they'd planned it beforehand.]

Gotta say, I'm impressed. You can sing as well as you dance.

[mayavericks]

[At that, she can't help but flash a sharp grin. She's practically preening.]

It's all I've ever known. It would be quite the blow to my ego if you said you weren't impressed.

[alchemistake]

[Varian can't help but be impressed. He has multiple talents himself, but they don't require quite so much dexterity as this.]

So you've been doing this ever since you were little?

[mayavericks]

I have been. [She nods.]

My parents were both performers. I carry that legacy in my blood and bones.

[alchemistake]

Oh, that's great! My dad's a farmer...which, I guess I fell a little far from that tree.

[He shrugs one shoulder after glancing back down at his feet to make sure he's not about to step on hers; it's something he's accepted at this point.]

[mayavericks]

[He's done a good job of not doing that so far. Not that Maya can't handle it. She's used to the clumsier girls of her school, after all.]

I imagine there's less pressure that way?

[alchemistake]

Oh, you'd...be surprised.

[Varian purses his lips, looking off to the side.]

My dad doesn't exactly approve of the work that I do. Not that I blame him...I'm causing accidents left and right. But it's not for lack of trying, these things just take...time.

If he'd be more patient with me, he'd see that.

[mayavericks]

That's science, is it not? It is not based in success, but in theorizing and experimentation?

[She supposes that, knowing what little of Varian's time that she does, science might be a little more prone to error but... She can hardly blame him for a few mistakes, especially considering his age.]

You shouldn't be afraid of pursuing what pleases you.

[alchemistake]

Yeah....thanks. I'm glad you think so.

[Because she's right. He's bound to make mistakes, that's just the nature of the thing.]

Honestly, I think Dad just...doesn't fully understand it. Science isn't something most people pursue where I'm from.

[mayavericks]

Then you are a trailblazer. The first of your kind. [She tips her chin up.]

It is always a difficult path, but it's a noble pursuit. I can only imagine the success you will find.

[alchemistake]

A trailblazer, huh...you know, I like the sound of that.

[And just for that little confidence boost, he'll give Maya a (careful) twirl.]

It takes tons of failures to succeed, so I just gotta keep trying.
