[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[ Truth be told, Orpheus is torn between being really impressed and sort of nervous by seeing all the food this man - Sponge Bob, Miss Hester called him? - is making laid out like this. It seems like a lot for, what, twenty people or so? And while he'd seen a pretty good supply of food in the kitchen while exploring earlier, they don't know how long they're going to be here. But Sponge Bob seems to be having such a good time, he doesn't have the heart to ask him out and out about rationing yet. ]

Actually, can I have these pancakes? [ he asks, pointing to a stack. ] Or are they for someone else?

[Spongebob is very clearly not concerned with any of that. Frankly, he has a hard time believing anything bad is going to happen. Sure the murder thing isn't great but Hester seems nice enough!]

Take as many as you want! I can always make more anyway.

Ooh! Or I could make you some fresh pancakes if you want!

[Please don't accept this offer there are already plenty.]

Oh, no, that's okay! [ says Orpheus, hurriedly. He picks up a short stack, seems to consider it for a moment, then carefully puts one more pancake on top of it with a fork. Just one. He feels guilty about it for a moment, but... they are already all made up, and it's not like anyone else is taking them at the moment. ]

How are supplies in the kitchen? Do you think there's going to be enough for everyone for the next... um. However long we might be here? [ Possibly indefinitely if no one murders anyone else, which, Orpheus personally feels is going to be the case. Hopefully someone comes by to restock the kitchen eventually? Or they get let out before any of that becomes necessary. ]

I think they seem pretty good. [Said in a tone that definitely implies that he had not thought about this before now.] But I'm sure Hester will let us have more food if we run out!

[ Wow, what's it like to look at a pantry and not immediately start rationing it out in case of emergency, it sounds exciting. Anyway, Orpheus frowns a little bit when he mentions Hester, looking thoughtful. ]

Hopefully! [ he says, sounding genuinely hopeful but also like he has cause to need to be hopeful rather than taking that for granted. ] What do you think of Miss Hester, though? She seems... kind of unusual? I think she's trying to help us, but...

[ She was awfully casual about the whole encouraging them to murder each other business. ]

[It probably helps him that he technically doesn't need food (as far as he knows) but he has a fondness of food.]

She seems nice to me! I'm not sure why she wants to help keep us here, but I'm sure she has a good reason!

[Non murdery reasons.]

It sounded like we were all chosen for a reason. Maybe it's some kind of test?

[ Orpheus doesn't really like the sound of that, but it's better than just taking the murder talk at face value. He pauses, putting a forkful of pancake in his mouth contemplatively, and proceeds to completely forget that train of thought. ]

Oh! This is really good! Um, thank you, I forgot to say earlier. Are you a professional?

It's a weird test if it is one! But I'm okay with this as long as I get to meet all you guys!

[Really this is a net positive situation to him so far!]

How'd you guess? I'm a fry cook! A pretty darn good one, if I do say so myself.

It is nice, getting to talk to people from all over like this.

[ Also really confusing, but Orpheus spends a lot of his time being confused by other people, so is this really that different? (It is, but he's trying his best to stay positive.)

Anyway, he nods in agreement at Spongebob's assessment of his own skill. ]

You managed to get all of this together really quickly, and it's really good. I haven't had anything like this in a really long time.

[ Even with Persephone bringing back spring, there's still ongoing shortages of a lot of things. Sugar is a big one. Dairy, eggs, maple syrup - a lot of the things that make a pancake a pancake. ]

I agree! I love Bikini Bottom, but I get to leave it much! It's so nice to be able to meet people from other seas!

[He blushes slightly at the compliment.]

Aww you flatter me, but it's not hard once you know what you're doing! Maybe I can show you how to make pancakes so you can have it more often when you go home!

[That's the issue, right?]

Bikini Bottom? That's an unusual name for - a town? You live by the sea, then?

[ Orpheus takes another bite of pancake as Spongebob talks, and shakes his head politely. ]

Oh, no, I know how to make them! Not as well as you do, but. It's just hard to get all the ingredients, where I'm from.

Under the sea, actually!

[But with that bomb casually dropped, he gives Orpheus a look of concern.]

Is there a food shortage where you are? Maybe I should pack some extra pancakes before we have to leave this school.

Wow, really? [ Orpheus doesn't look as surprised by that as he could be, but he does squint a little at Spongebob, looking him over. ] Are you a nereid?

[ He thought they were all women, is the thing, but he guesses there's nothing that says they have to be. ]

And there is, yes. I don't know how well pancakes would keep? But your cooking is really good. If you wanted to make something for me and my wife to take back home with us, I wouldn't say no.

[Smiles blankly.]

Am I a what?

[But more importantly:]

Oh, but pancakes keep up pretty well in the freezer! I can also make you some Krabby Patties for the road once you guys are ready!

A nereid! They're sea spirits, that attend Poseidon's court. I guess you're probably not one, then. [ If he's not familiar with the word. ]

We don't really have freezers back where we come from. I think some people do, but they're really expensive, so it's mostly for restaurants and professional chefs. I appreciate the thought, though! What's a Krabby Patty?

Oh, that must be it then! I've heard about Poseidon, but Neptune is the king where I live! I guess I must be like a Neptunian version of a nereid.

But geez, you don't have freezers at home? Well I can make sure to get you some good snack mixes then! Ooh and Krabby Patties are only the best sandwich in the ocean! It's a bit early for them, but I can make one for you!

Maybe! I've never heard of Neptune, but it would make sense. That would be really nice of you, though! The snack mix, I mean. I think I'm fine with these pancakes for now?

[ He gestures with the plate. ] But maybe later! I'd be more than happy to try more of your cooking, and I'm sure Eurydice would too.
