Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[ Orpheus, who happened to be wandering by on his way to the cafeteria, stops to watch the odd man work - and proceeds to get hit in the chest with the paintbrush after it's thrown away. So much for that bright white uniform, right? ]

Oh, um. Are you done with your mural? [ he asks, fumbling to catch the brush and getting paint all over his hands in the process. ]

[disharmonizes]

[...He's a little pleased the brush hit someone. At least some comedy came from this. The fumbling really adds to the bit, too.

Not really his best work, but beggars, choosers, etcetera.]

Oh, very done. I was going to make a statement about this place putting me to sleep, but then that started getting boring.

So, here we are.

[ Orpheus isn't really sure what to do with the paintbrush now that he has it, so he's just. Gonna hold onto it for now. ]

Oh. Is that why all the 'Z's? [ He was wondering about that. ] It's very, um. Original?

[ He doesn't know how happy Miss Hester will be about it, but it's not like they were told they couldn't paint all over the place. ]

[disharmonizes]

It's a bit trite, but I'm lacking in inspiration here. At this point, I'm just throwing things at the wall.

[...Speaking of, he's just going to pick up his paint can and splash some of that on the wall. For emphasis.]</small

Are you an artist, back home? [ Orpheus asks, stepping back away from the splash zone and succeeding mostly in only getting some droplets on his pants and shoes. The man certainly seems eccentric like some of Mister Hermes's more bohemian friends. ] It seems like a lot of the people here are. Mostly musicians, though, not painters.

Of a sort. Not a painter, musician, or anything like anyone here, though.

My preferred form of artistic expression is chaos. This is just the only real way I have of doing anything with it right now.

[He sure sees it as an art! Not everyone agrees. Weird, that.]

Oh, so you're an - um. [ What's the word again? He knows this, one of Mister Hermes's friends explained it to him. ] A dadaist?

[ he looks supremely pleased with himself for this assessment ]

...Close enough, I suppose. [Not really, but.] You could say I'm a bit of an expert in the subject.

Though I don't exactly have much to work with here. And splashing paint on the walls is actually starting to get boring.

[Like you know what Orpheus, gold star.]

[ He's familiar with contemporary artistic movements!! ]

What do you normally work with? If not paint or music or - anything like the rest of us. [ Which seems like kind of a sweeping assumption to make, but Orpheus isn't one to challenge it. ] Is it more performance pieces that you do?

[disharmonizes]

Something like that. Usually I work with magic. You could say everything is my canvas of choice.

Oh! Are you a sorcerer? I've only really met one of those before, and she didn't really use her magic for art.

[ As theatrical as Medea was, most of what she was trying to accomplish was actually very practical. ]

I think I can kind of see how that might work, though? It must be really impressive! [ He pauses, thinking about the conversation for a second and realizing something, then adds, ] Can you not do it now, though?

[disharmonizes]

A few steps above sorcerer, to be precise. Discord, Lord of Chaos. Spirit of Disharmony.

[Just a normal guy right now, though.]

No, currently, I'm suffering from some, ah, technical difficulties. I haven't been able to magic up anything substantial. Something here seems to be dampening my powers.

[ Orpheus looks a little startled at that, thinking about what his mom taught him about manners and unfamiliar spirits before taking a shallow bow. ]

Then, it's an honor to meet you, Lord Discord. [ He's not familiar with the name, but there are a lot of minor gods out there and also they're dealing with a situation where people are around from other worlds entirely. ] I'm Orpheus. That's... really worrisome? About your magic. Do you think it's the Wizard? I guess we knew they were powerful, but...

[ Enough to trap a spirit? Hmm. ]

[disharmonizes]

[Okay, the respect and actually using a title, that's new. Weird. But good.]

Who knows. Whoever this Wizard is, they're definitely powerful. Any old wizard I'm familiar with would never have enough power to trap me.

[ Orpheus nods along with that, frowning. It's really hard to trap a god, and he doesn't know of any way to take away their powers. ]

I guess we'll probably have to find out more about them, if we're going to get out of here without, um. You know. Doing what Miss Hester was telling us about. [ He doesn't want to say it out loud. Fidgeting absently with the buttons on his shirt for a moment, he glances down and remembers that his hands are still covered with paint. ]

Do you want this paintbrush back?

[disharmonizes]

Oh, yes, that. A little intense, really. Someone should tell this Wizard to lighten up a little.

[Eternal chaos, mayhem, screaming, sure, yes, that's fun. But the kidnapping and murdering thing is a little yikes.

As for that paintbrush, Discord just sort of waves at it dismissively.]

You can go ahead and keep that, I'm more than done with my painting career. Until I think of something that will actually turn things here upside down.

I know that a long time ago people used to be forced to fight to the death for other peoples entertainment? And supposedly it was for the glory of the gods, but none of them do that kind of thing anymore. I guess maybe the Wizard is trying to bring that back?

[ In a school setting instead of a coliseum, for some reason. Anyway Orpheus looks at the brush in his hands again and shrugs. He'll probably clean it off and put it back in the scene shop later. ]

[disharmonizes]

A little grim, hm? I mean, I'm no stranger to turning people against each other for fun, but geez.

[themuseabandonsyou]

A lot. [ It's a lot grim, in Orpheus's estimation. ] I don't really know why people did it, or thought it was fun to watch, and I don't know how we'd reason with someone who was doing this for entertainment.

[ And a pause, while Orpheus's listening skills catch up with the rest of him. ]

You're no stranger to what?

[disharmonizes]

Turning people against each other for fun? You know, trapping friends in mazes, slowly poisoning their friendship, turning their values upside down...

...You don't do that?

[Like he doesn't know damn well that's just a him thing.]

[ Orpheus gives Discord a confused and mildly dismayed look. ]

No! Why would I? That sounds like an awful thing to do to people!

[ He has to be joking, right? Then again, Orpheus guesses he did say he was the lord of chaos. It could kind of go either way. ]

[disharmonizes]

Don't knock it 'till you try it! You might enjoy it. I certainly do.

[Leaving out the part where it didn't end well for him, but no one needs to know that.]

I don't think I could do something like that even if I wanted to. Is that what you use your magic for?

[ He sounds significantly less impressed than when he thought Discord was a performance artist. Orpheus isn't normally much one to question the gods to their faces, but jerking people around for fun is just openly cruel. ]

[disharmonizes]

Sometimes. Other times it's just cotton candy clouds and chocolate milk rain.

Whatever I'm in the mood for, really. And in my defense, they chose to go into the maze. [As if he cares about defending himself here at all.] It's not like I forced anyone in.

[Tricked, yes, forced, no.]

[ Well that sounds kind of ridiculous, but not bad, at least? Maybe kind of unpleasant to clean up when all that milk starts to go sour, but still. Orpheus keeps on frowning in disapproval, though. ]

Did they get out of the maze okay, at least? [ he asks, sounding worried about this nebulous 'they' and still extremely unimpressed. ]
