Week Four

[Last week, Gershwin High School Academy University saw its very first intentional murder! What a milestone! And right after Spongebob's No Murder party, too - that doesn't seem like it bodes very well for anybody's future.

You all wake up this morning with yet another new memory returned to you. You'll also find that the school's external doors have now unlocked. Congratulations! You're free! Unfortunately, you also seem to be entirely in the middle of nowhere. So maybe it's more of a symbolic victory.

Still, you should look around and do some investigation! Maybe you'll find a fun surprise.]

[Morning finds Maya in the costume room. She's pulling out bolts of fabric and any leather-esque materials. Her sewing job is a hasty one, but it looks like she's trying to put together a sheath and sword belt? It doesn't seem to be going quite her way, though. Her teeth are clenched, and she looks incredibly frustrated.

Eventually, she'll leave the project for the time being, though! She opts to go outside and, well. She'd intended to simply go for a run around the football field but... She's pretty quickly distracted by the animals. She's not exactly a pet person but... Well.

She does end up with a chicken in her lap at some point. And though her eyes still seem distant, her shoulders seem to relax, just a little!

After some time with the therapy chickens, Maya returns to her work in the costume room. It keeps her busy until later in the evening. It's only then that she makes her way to Rodgers dorm.]

Janis?

Rodgers Dorm

[fourbutts]

[ Janis is... sort of pacing a little when she arrives, with a restless energy. But that breaks when Maya enters. ]

Hey, babe. How...?

[ Are you? Are things? She hasn't been slightly terrified of what Maya might try to do and have no idea what to expect right now or anything, nope. ]

[mayavericks]

[Maya's quiet as she slips into the room. She closes the door behind her. It's probably a little concerning that she doesn't ask for permission. She doesn't even ask if she can sit on a bed -- she just does. Her sword lays across her lap, bundled now in the makeshift sheath she's created.

Janis had tried to ask a question. Maya can guess what she was getting at, and knows that she doesn't have an answer. Instead, she disregards it and speaks.]

I need to ask a favor of you.

[fourbutts]

Uh... yeah, sure. What's up?

[ If this is what Maya needs, it's what she's here to provide. ]

[mayavericks]

Take this.

[She holds the sword out to her. It even has a little belt for Janis to use.]

I don't... Think it is a good idea for me to carry it right now.

[fourbutts]

[ Janis looks at her, looks at the sword. ]

You'll... still be able to handle yourself, right? If someone comes after you without it?

[mayavericks]

I am not as talented in hand to hand as I am with a sword, I will admit that. [She shrugs.] But I held my own against Spongebob the other day.

[She lets that hang for a moment, before.... realizing that it's probably not as comforting as she thinks.]

And... It just means I'll have to stay close to you. I know you will not let anything happen to me.

[fourbutts]

[ Janis sniffs, quietly, then nods. ]

And here I was worried you were here to try to... never mind.

[ She picks up the sword. ]

You got it, babe. I'll be the knight for a bit.

[mayavericks]

[Maya tries to catch her hand as she pulls it away.]

Try to what?

Costume Room

...need some help?

[Comes a voice from across the way, none other than Varian who honestly hasn't been in the costume room for a while. But sometimes he passes through, and he couldn't help but notice Maya...struggling.]

I wouldn't call myself a seamstress or anything, but if there's one thing I know how to make, it's a tool belt.

[AND WELL this is sort of like that, right?]

[mayavericks]

[Maya turns her head, but only a little. Really, other than that, the only acknowledgement of his presence is a short, clipped sort of nod. Probably not encouraging his help, especially since after a few moments of silence, she turns to face him fully.]

Did you say something?

[alchemistake]

[Oh dear...Varian's brows knit together a bit.]

I offered to help you with that...if you want, I mean.

[He can tell she's distant. Distracted, but...that's not enough to make him leave.]

[mayavericks]

Oh. Of course.

[She gives a nod and motions him over. Right now she has an array of leather and cloth outfits laid out. A few pieces have cut but it's all rather uneven.]

I just want someone to be able to carry this safely -- myself or otherwise. It's probably not best to brandish it as much as I do. Especially considering Farrah's --

[She trails off. Varian probably gets where she's going.]

[Varian nods, stepping forward so he can get a better look at the materials she has laid out for this purpose.]

Well, leather's probably the best place to start...light, but thick enough that it's not going to go through without some real force behind it. Are you having trouble getting it sewn together from there?

[mayavericks]

Cutting it, sewing it...

[She puts her head in her hands.]

Costume design was for Class A, not Class B. I could tell you how I thought it should look, but creating it? The others were far better with that.

[Look at her! Admitting weakness.]

[alchemistake]

[Admitting weakness is the first step to getting some proper help, and Varian is happy to oblige.]

Well, I don't know much about costume design...but I like to think I'm pretty handy at putting stuff together from a blueprint. Or...description, in this case.

[He carefully picks up one of the pieces of leather, feeling it between his fingers to see how thick it might need to be.]

Why don't you describe to me what you're aiming for with this one? I'll see if I can help you get something going.

[mayavericks]

I was trying to make it both long and wide enough to fit the blade. Unfortunately -- [She motions to the jagged edges that her cut had taken.]

Apparently I cannot cut in a straight line.

[ You know who is also here, getting accosted by the goat? It's Peregrine! She's currently locked in a staring contest with it, as it keeps trying to bite at her cloak, which now has a fully smoked golden brown piece of deerskin leather as its lining. She's got the edges of it bunched up in her arms, to keep it out of reach of eager mouths. ]

No! No. This? This is not for chewing. It's for wearing. And it's mine. So I'm gonna let it drop, and you...are going to stay right there...

[ The second she lets a little corner go, the goat starts forward with an excited bleat and she quickly backs up. ]

No! Bad! Bad, bad goat!

[Today has... honestly been terrible. Miserable. She's been stuck in her own damn head, and none of the usual steps have shaken her from it.

And yet--

Well, sorry, Peregrine, she can't help but laugh.]

Do you need some help?

[comeandfindme]

[ Things with Maya have been weird since yesterday. She tried to help, she did, but now they're weird and Peregrine hates it. With almost a pout, bitterly, she looks up, holding the cloak protectively. ]

No! [ The goat bleats, like she was the one Peregrine was addressing. ] ...Maybe a little!

[mayavericks]

[Maya steps over to the goat, and... Well... What does she do now?

Since it's only a scrap of fabric, rather than anything valuable, Maya decides to pull the "ribbon" from her hair. She holds it out for the goat, swaying it back and forth like some sort of metronome.]

How about this, instead?

[comeandfindme]

[ The goat bleats cheerfully and then spies Maya's oh-so-tantalizing ribbon. She trots forward...and then jumps at it with a mighty chomp. ]

[mayavericks]

[Okay, well. This is Tendo Maya, yelping and jumping back. She can handle giraffes and feral teenage girls but this? No thank you.]

[comeandfindme]

[ This is a side of Maya that Peregrine’s never seen. It’s fascinating! Would be more fascinating if she wasn’t getting attacked by an excitable goat. ]

Nooo, no no- down, down, Billy, down!! [ Peregrine trails after as the goat, undeterred, trots after Maya. Why did she pull away the tasty snack? She offered it, after all! ]

[mayavericks]

[If it's the ribbon she wants, it's the ribbon she gets. She drops it on the ground and scurries a few feet back.]
