[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

Oh, it's actually really simple. [ OF COURSE IT IS, PEREGRINE, ] You gotta dig a hole in the ground— well, you can use a can, or an old wood stove? But a hole's best if you're just roughing it. Start a fire and let it burn for like...thirty minutes? An hour? Enough to get a buncha coals. You put the coals in the hole, and get some punky wood— uh, wood that's all...rotten, you know?

Anyway, it causes a bunch of smoke to come up. You gotta hang your hide over it— that's a whole other thing, you gotta make it kinda like a pouch, like a bag? Sometimes you gotta use an old pant leg to direct the smoke, and...

[ She frowns. ]

It'd be a lot easier to draw this, I think.

[Well, that's a lot of detail! The Balladeer sincerely doubts he'll ever have occasion to use it, but Peregrine clearly cares about this stuff.]

What are you going to do with them if you can figure it out? Or is it just to keep them...preserved?

[ That's a good response to anything Peregrine starts rambling about. ]

Um. Well... I don't like to waste anything that comes from a dead animal? Especially one that's hunted. So that's part of it, but I also really think we could use something warm, if the Wizard tries to freeze us out. The problem is, if you don't smoke a hide, then when it gets wet, even after you treat it with a tanning solution, it stiffens back up.

[ ...But, actually, she smiles. ]

I kinda have a work around, thanks to Connor, but... I dunno. I still wanna try.

I guess you could always start a fire in one of the garbage cans from the shop - the metal ones? But the smoke would be terrible. We can't even get the windows open.

[These books...hm. He frowns for a moment, then leaves the shelf he was looking at. He's not so sure about...any of that.]

Well, I doubt I'm gonna be the guy who comes up with a fix. [Has he technically ever gone outside?] What'd Connor suggest?

That's the problem I keep running into. It'd just smoke us out, and it'd be hard to make sure the hide doesn't scorch, you know?

[ She sighs...but then she pulls up a corner of her cloak. ]

He didn't really suggest something? But, at the very least if I'm looking to make us something warm, well— he modified this. See there's buttons inside? He said it was to...put one of the deer skins in, if I wanted.

[ There's that and the fact that he customized it with really cute forest appliqué and deer embroidery but like. Peregrine is not bringing that fact up because she's still a little embarrassed by it. ]

With an outer protection, even though we'd have to be careful not to get the inside wet, it means they'd be more effective.

Oh, that's so cute!

[He's definitely picked up most of his new ways of relating to clothing choices from Elle.]

Makes sense. Do you...do you think it'd really get that cold in here?

[ Oh no. She's blushing. ]

Uhh... Well, I think it's possible. We've, you know...already seen they're willing to resort to threats.

Yeah, it's a little forest theme! And deer, you love deer!

That's - yeah, that's true. It could be pretty cold outside, even though it's sunny...? [would like to repeat that he's probably technically never been outside]

I just don't really wear things people'd call cute a lot.

[ She fiddles with the edge of the cloak in an uncharacteristically shy way. ]

Anyway, uh— it could be. I was mostly thinking about, you know...if they started messing with the temperature inside.

[ She drops her voice low; she doesn't want to give them ideas. ]

[He catches that note of wariness, glancing up at the ceiling. It's sort of an obvious thing to do, but this man is not accustomed to subterfuge.]

Yeah. It's all been pretty personalized stuff so far, but if they run out...

[Only so many times you can recycle a threat, right? Especially if - well, "your home will be destroyed" includes so much. The potential loss of friends or family...where do they go from that?]

There'd be a lot of drama in something like that, too.

...And that's why they do things, right? For the drama? 'Cause...it's a show?

[ She feels and sounds so bitter. ]

Sounds that way.

[The Balladeer winces a little; he never likes when...well. When people treat his whole existence and perception of reality like it's some kind of personal attack. Normally he'd just back off, but...if the Wizard sees it that way, too, it's probably important.]

Did you notice how...happy he seemed, when we all protested what he was doing to Sissi like that? Like that's what he was hoping we'd do.

Huh? I mean... I just thought he sounded happy 'cause he's a sadist.

[ Like, it's not that weird a take, right? ]

He said we were already coming together. Like this whole thing isn't kinda designed to drive people apart.

[It's kinda contradictory? Assuming that's how he meant it.]

[ Did he? ...To be honest Peregrine was a little out of it last Friday, so— ]

Well, it's a pretty screwed up way to encourage connections. What, kidnap us and push us to kill each other, but he wants us to bond?

[He shrugs.]

Yeah. I kinda wish we could talk to him more. Not that I really want to have a chat - but the better we understand him, the better we might be able to deal with him. The guy seems like he lets stuff slip.

The guy seems like he likes to listen to himself talk.

Same difference. We need to know more about him - how he thinks, what he wants.

[ Frustrated, she closes one of the useless books she's been flipping through. ]
