Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[ Orpheus reaches up and pulls down a couple of cans of what turns out to be coconut milk. Wow! That's exotic. He looks suitably impressed, before handing them over to her. ]

Are you worried about food running out here, too?

[ Immediately, Peregrine starts looking them over, setting them down when she's satisfied. ]

No. ...Well, yes, eventually. Food's a powerful motivator, if they decide to cut it off. [ Setting another down. ] But what I'm really checking is that the food hasn't been tampered with.

[ Orpheus blanches a little. The idea of the wizard deliberately cutting off the food supply to make them more desperate hadn't occurred to him. Maybe it should have, though. Some people get mean when the chips are down. ]

Tampered with? How so?

[ Peregrine continues to work, examining another can. ]

Like, if there's signs of them being opened before. Never eat canned food that looks like it's been repackaged. Other than that, it's good to look for dents, rust or corrosion... Anything that could indicate it's in poor condition.

[ Orpheus nods along, taking another can off the shelf and handing it to Peregrine. He knew that last part, at least, though he doesn't feel the need to tell her that she's stating the obvious. Something does seem to occur to him after a moment, though, and he says, ]

If the Wizard is powerful enough to make unbreakable glass and and earthquake and make a knife disappear out of midair, isn't it possible they could just reseal cans they've tampered with? Or do something to them without even opening them.

[ Peregrine stops in her methodical observation. ]

I don’t… [ She frowns fiercely. ] I hadn’t thought about that.

Sorry. [ he says, as if his bringing it up is what made it into a problem. ] None of us have gotten sick or anything from eating the food here so far, so I don't think it's poisoned or drugged? But I guess we should be careful.

[ Looking at the canned food with a critical eye, Peregrine doesn't respond yet, just listens. ]

All this...magic stuff, it's not really what happens, in Whitetail? I've been preparing for...for the unexpected, you know. But this is so much more beyond unexpected that I don't really know what to do.

[ For lack of a better idea, Orpheus is going to keep pulling cans down off the top shelf and putting them on the counter. Eurydice will want to count these anyway, and she wouldn't be able to reach them either. ]

Right, you don't really have gods or sorcerers or anything like that where you come from. I guess this would all be even more confusing for you, if you weren't used to the idea of at least some of this happening.

[ He frowns, thoughtfully. Is there anything helpful he could say here? Not really. ]

But I guess I'm pretty used to that sort of thing, even by the standards of my world? And I still don't understand any of this. So maybe it doesn't help.

[ That should be somewhat encouraging, that they're all in the same boat. It's not, though. Peregrine snatches up another can. ]

So, there's probably no one here who's got a handle on this. No one who can guide the rest of us.

The Balladeer seems to understand what's going on better than most of us? In a way. And Miss Hester really doesn't seem to like him, which might mean something.

[ Orpheus still means to ask him about that. ]

But other than that, no. I don't think it's going to be easy to find answers here. It's all so confusing.

[ The mention of Hester curls Peregrine's lip, but she holds back her frustration. ]

...Then I'll just have to try harder. [ Her voice is firm and forced. ]

[ That's understandable. Orpheus doesn't sound terribly thrilled about her either, even if he's still polite enough to call her 'miss'. ]

You won't have to try alone, at least? We're all looking, and I'll tell you about anything I find that seems important.

[ For a moment, Peregrine stills, almost bristles. Then she sighs and shrugs. ]

Yeah. I guess that's one positive about all of us being stuck here. ...We have to work together.

[ That's not a reaction Orpheus was expecting, and he looks at her with a bit of confusion. The tension passes, though, and he decides to just shrug it off. ]

We do. I'm sure we'll think of something together? There must be some kind of way out of here.

[ He hands her another can. ]

For now I think taking stock of what we have is a really good idea, though.

[ It's a weird reaction, that's for sure. Peregrine doesn't seem inclined to give any hints as to just what's going on, either, as she just takes the can and starts looking over it. ]

That should've been my first step... I'll start on that next.

[ Orpheus nods. ]

Eurydice and I are working on taking an inventory of the kitchen right now, actually! [ he says, gesturing to where his wife is currently examining the contents of one of the refrigerators. ] If you want to help us after you're done with this, you can. It's a big kitchen, and there's a lot of things to keep track of.

[ She wonders if more than one person doing inventory could get confusing. She almost voices as much, but pauses. ]

...Alright. I'll take the lower cabinets?

[ It might, but that doesn't really occur to Orpheus, who's just happy for the help. ]

Okay! I'll take the upper ones.

[ where Peregrine and Eurydice can't reach-- ]

There's some pretty exotic stuff here? Things that I've never seen back home. Like this. [ He pulls out a can of pineapple rings in syrup. ] I don't think I've ever had pineapple before?

Pineapples are exotic? [ Peregrine asks this and then frowns lightly. ] ...They're pretty standard for me. But, I know a guy who mostly eats canned food and hunts for the rest, so... I guess I get how it might not be, for some.

It's hard to get most things, out where I live. Pretty much everything has to be shipped out by train. And there's been a lot of trouble with the harvest recently, so a lot of different kinds of food are scarcer than they would be otherwise?

[ It's god stuff, but he refrains from mentioning that explicitly this time. ]

[ Train. That's weird to hear, if he's...actually Orpheus and not just some guy way too into LARPing. It's a point in the second column at the very least. ]

That's why you two...took to the kitchen. You're used to scarcity...right?

[ Orpheus nods, glancing over at Eurydice again. ]

Yes. I think this is the most food either of us have seen in one place in a long time? And it's hard not to worry about what might happen if it runs out and we're still stuck in here. We both know how to make things last if it gets bad, but...

[ It wouldn't be pleasant, and it wouldn't last forever. ]

...I know how to hunt. And some...things to help with harvests. But it'd require us to be able to go outside. And I don't really wanna consider we'd be here long enough to grow crops.

Hopefully we won't be.

[ That's not a notion that had occurred to Orpheus before, but he definitely doesn't like it, grimacing a little. ]

Maybe they'll let us go outside eventually though. Or open up the parts of the school that are blocked off? You've noticed those, right? The locked doors near the gym, and the scene shop.
