Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

(( OOC: This will be the last mod post for this week! Feel free to start submitting regains for any threads that aren't with Hester. Remember, song threads mean an extra coin! This is a peace week, so get all that CR while you can! ))

[ On Wednesday morning Orpheus wakes up in Rodgers dorm at roughly the crack of dawn, picking up the lyre guitar he'd swiped from the music room from where he'd left it lying next to his bed. He slings it over his shoulders on its strap and sneaks out of the room as quietly as he can to avoid waking the less infuriatingly early-birds, and heads off to meet up with Eurydice, intending to spend most of the day following her around, as before.

Which he does, but being himself he does happen to wander off occasionally, either to give her some space or just because something caught his eye. Like the showers in the men's locker room, where he spends some time standing - fully clothed - in one of the stalls, considering the handles on the wall carefully before turning one and proceeding to drench himself in scalding water. He yelps, alarmed, and leaps back out, watching the water stream from the shower head and looking both startled and impressed.

Later, still damp from his shower experience, he settles down in the music room, playing a song on his guitar and humming along. He has a sheet of paper with him, propped up on one of the music stands, and occasionally he stops to jot something down - anyone who comes close enough to look will see a combination of guitar tabs, traditional musical notation, and lyrics, the lattermost of which are mostly crossed out and written over multiple times.

After that, he finds himself drawn to History Club, curious about just who might show up to actually try to teach them in this place that's supposedly a school and what they might learn, given that apparently some of them are here from completely different worlds. He mills about, slightly early and pacing around the scene shop and looking at the poster on the wall.
]

Who do you think that is? [ he asks, pointing at the hairy ape-thing on the left. ] Why are they fighting President Abraham?

history club

[personal profile] howtheworldwas 2021-06-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Orpheus, we can't just call presidents by their first names. That's rude.

[ Eurydice is, as usual, standing right next to Orpheus and talking in a low, urgent whisper. She has also forgotten President Lincoln's last name. She will not be admitting this. ]
themuseabandonsyou: (concern)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-03 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Was he one of the ones that had one? [ asks Orpheus, brows furrowing. ] I thought he was Abraham, son of Peter. Or, um, no, that was one of the others.

[ why can't everyone just go by their lineage instead of having weird extra names like normal people ]
howtheworldwas: (thin lipped)

[personal profile] howtheworldwas 2021-06-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ SQUINTS ]

Maybe? I know there was a son of Jeff. I think this one had a cabin?

[ Eurydice only remembers that bit because she really wants a cabin. ]
themuseabandonsyou: (looking down)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
He was born in a log cabin in Kentucky. He also gave a really important speech about... something. I was supposed to memorize some of it in school? But I didn't, and I got in trouble.

[ He rubs at his knuckles, thinking back and frowning. ]

Maybe coming to history club was a bad idea. Do you think they're going to make us memorize things?
howtheworldwas: (Default)

[personal profile] howtheworldwas 2021-06-03 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's -- [ Eurydice snaps her fingers ] -- four score and eleven years ago. Or something like that.

[ Eurydice looks back at the poster and frowns. ]

I don't think they will. We're adults now, they can't make us do anything. And if they do, I'll cover for you.

[ That's true love...too bad Eurydice remembers next to no history whatsoever. ]

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Orpheus beams at her, glad for the support, before looking back at the poster again. ]

Anyway, I don't think I remember anything about him fighting - whoever that is?

[ He's assuming it's a 'who' because it looks kind of like a really messed up satyr or something. Thinking for a moment, he adds, ]

The Balladeer said that there are people here from different worlds. Like Elle doesn't recognize the gods, even though she's from California. Maybe he fought monsters in this world, but not ours.

Maybe it's Booth.

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
What?

[ Sorry what was that the Balladeer Orpheus was in school for like three nonconsecutive years and doesn't even remember that this particular President was one of those weirdos with two names, this one is going way over his head. ]
tellthestory: (♪ gemendo ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Johnny Booth. He killed President Lincoln. God, he is just the worst.

[he has an entire song about this do you want to hear it]
themuseabandonsyou: (flower)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
[ Orpheus just stares blankly for a moment before it clicks into place that 'Lincoln' was the President's family name. Right! ]

Oh. Yes. Was he a - [ Orpheus pauses, closely examining the poster again. ] A cyclops? Why is he naked?
tellthestory: (♪ magnifico ♫)

[The Balladeer blinks, then bursts into laughter.

Just. Just give him a second.]

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man - yeah, he's a half-man, half-ape creature!

[...but even a joking lie doesn't sit well with the Balladeer, and he almost immediately adds:]

No, I was joking. He's just a guy. But he would hate being portrayed as a horrible Sasquatch monster.
themuseabandonsyou: (profile)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
[ This isn't the first time Orpheus has made someone laugh without knowing why what he said was funny, and it probably won't be the last. Generally he finds the best thing to do is just wait until they explain it, so he does so, patiently. ]

Okay. Is that what that's called? [ He points to the ape creature. ] A Sasquatch?
tellthestory: (♪ capriccio ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that or Bigfoot. It's a thing people say lives in the woods. No idea what the poster's about, I don't think Lincoln was known for fighting them. I mean, they aren't vampires!

[...]

That was a joke, too.
themuseabandonsyou: (flower)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
What's a vampire?

[ this conversation started low and is rapidly going downhill in terms of Orpheus comprehending what's going on ]
tellthestory: (♪ etude ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sort of a folklore monster. They're an undead person who consumes the blood of the living to survive.

[If nothing else, the Balladeer rarely seems to be that surprised when people don't know things. He'd be a little bit of a hypocrite if he were, right?]
themuseabandonsyou: (profile)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Sort of like a vrykolakas? They eat livers, not blood, but... [ It sounds similar enough in theory? ] I don't remember anything about President Lincoln fighting them either, but maybe it's another one of those things that's different where you come from.
tellthestory: (♪ verismo ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's a story.

[Which - with him, that line is a little odd. But it's not historical.]

People made it up to be funny, I think. He's already such a big figure in American mythology - why not have him fight evil vampires?
themuseabandonsyou: (flower)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
You said most things are stories. [ says Orpheus, brows furrowing in confusion. ] So he didn't do that, but people say he did to be funny. That's... weird? Aren't there plenty of true stories to tell about him?

[ His history teacher sure seemed to think so. ]
tellthestory: (Default)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but people like making things up!

[and like who doesn't want to write dumb vampire stories, it was a whole thing for a while]

I'm pretty sure the guy has more biographies than practically anyone, though. There's no shortage of non-fiction out there.
themuseabandonsyou: (profile)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's true. [ says Orpheus. He mostly deals in historical stories and songs, but he's read and listened to and enjoyed plenty of fiction too. ]

It just seems weird to make things up about a person who was real. [ who would do that ] Do you think the things we'll be learning about him here are going to be, um.

[ He pauses, trying to think of how to phrase what he means. ]

Things that are true in all our worlds? Or just this one?
tellthestory: (♪ marcato ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, my entire show is sort of that. We're - we were fairly historically accurate, but that's just the nature of it.

[They do have Guiteau's real song. That was weird.]

Probably hard to say. Some of us are from really different worlds. Like Mumble or Spongebob - is there a penguin version of Lincoln somewhere out there for Mumble?

[why would you speak this into existence?]
themuseabandonsyou: (profile)

[personal profile] themuseabandonsyou 2021-06-04 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, too. I guess even historical accounts get kind of mixed up in the telling? Just because of how storytelling works. What gets left out or added or changed to make it make sense to an audience who wasn't there.

[ The vampire thing still seems a little extreme, but he's willing to leave it there for now. ]

I just assumed Mumble's people were having their own history in Antarctica, not echoing ours? Like how the French don't have a George Washington, they have their own people.
tellthestory: (♪ lusingando ♫)

[personal profile] tellthestory 2021-06-04 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Depends what his story's like. Honestly, I'd put better odds on Spongebob having some kind of...Spongebraham Plankton.

[They seem to have basically all the human stuff you'd expect, after all, whereas it kinda sounds like Mumble just does penguin stuff.]
