[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

It's quite normal in my time. All that it takes is the proper equipment and power.

[That's not what's confusing Salieri, Angus.]

The same power as time travel requires? [this is so much]

Far less than time travel. You need to do a lot of spacetime manipulation to just open a portal to another time. Spaceships just need fuel.

This all seems...rather fantastical from my perspective.

But it's reality. [He moves the potato onto his knife hand and pats Salieri on the shoulder.] I'm certain your timeline will eventually catch up, Monsieur

...perhaps. Though something tells me that such a time is farther off than I will one day be able to see.

[It's a real tragedy, Salieri.

Angus finishes his next potato and lets it drop into the pot.]

Would this be enough for the soup?

[Salieri starts a bit as the potato drops into the pot, and his attention jerks back up to Angus from where he'd been giving his own potato a thousand yard stare]

Ah... [he glances down into the pot] Let me just finish this one, and that should be sufficient. [he's going to quickly finish that up and drop it into the pot, before pushing to his feet] Let's move the pot up onto the counter. We will then need to roughly chop these potatoes, and cover them with water.

[Angus grabs both handles of the pot and lifts it onto the counter. For the chopping, he picks the biggest knife on the rack.]

Onto the counter, they will go.

[great, he will definitely let Angus do the heavy lifting here, seeing as he is Mr. Noodle Arms. Though he does look bemused at Angus's choice of knife]

I believe that will be more than sufficient for chopping them. [he'll select one as well, though not nearly as big, and pull one of the peeled potatoes out and begin to start chopping it]

[Angus mimics Salieri's method. Then does some extra cuts here and there when the pieces end up a bit big.]

Have you cooked as lot as a musician in training?

As a musician in training? No, not at all.

At the monastery where I lived as a teenager, yes.

A religious upbringing, yes? [Let's just assume that monasteries somehow exist in Angus' universe.]

Oh no, I was only there for a year or so. But long enough to do some work in the kitchens, cooking for the monks.

That's more than what I have studied the art of cooking. All I have been able to do is hand over meat during a hunt or re-heat prepared meals.

[that'll earn Angus a bit of a chuckle]

Well, fortunately I do know a few things that are fairly easy to make, if you'd like to learn. Aside from potato soup, that is.

Thank the gods, I cannot survive entirely on soup. [He dumps in the last of the chopped potatoes.] I look forward to your future lessons, Monsieur Salieri. When shall be our next session?

Whenever you'd like, I suppose. I'm thinking of putting on a short scene from an opera I'm composing, if I can get enough people, but in between that, whenever you're available would be perfectly fine. [excellent, Salieri is going to start putting water into the pot, then, as well as starting to measure out the spices he's pulled down earlier]

[Angus stands by, letting the expert measure the spices. In a few minutes, he will have forgotten which spices were added, but there was quite a variety.]

An opera would do us some good. What tale is it?

The tale of Les Danaïdes, from myth. Have you heard of them?

I'm afraid I do not recognize the name. Different universes, remember?

One never knows, hence my asking.

[he starts to add the spices, measuring them out carefully]

It's about the story of a king named Danaus and his 50 daughters, called the Danaïdes. In summary, the king is defeated by his brother, and his fifty daughters are given to his brother's fifty sons as wives. He then instructs his daughters to kill their husbands on their wedding night. Only one of his daughters, Hypermnestra, refuses to kill her husband Lycée, and she flees with him on the wedding night when the murder happens. Naturally, Danaus is furious when he learns of his escape, but there is not enough time to do anything before Lycée storms the city with a gathered army, killing Danaus and all the Danaïdes, save for his wife Hypermnestra.

[the pot is nudged on to the right burner, which he turns on, and then covers with a lid]

In the end, the Danaïdes and their father are dragged down to Hades, where he is chained to a rock and has his entrails torn from him by a vulture. The Danaïdes' punishment is to eternally pour water into a tub with a whole at the bottom, and when the tub is filled, they will be cleansed of their sin.

[Angus leans on the counter as he listens to the story. The names are unfamiliar, but the operatic tragedy is a welcome tale. How long has he only listened to tales of death and murder instead of living through one? Such drama, such theatrics!]

Imagine the stage setting when all actors are performing! That ending must make a hell of a show. [wink.] Is this story of your own making, or is it based on an existing tale?

Well, I haven't composed the ending yet, but I certainly hope that it will be.

[the corner of Salieri's mouth curls a bit, pleased with having a receptive audience.]

As for the tale itself, it is an ancient myth from an empire that has long-since fallen.

Then I thank you for bringing this old legend to us, who may not be from your land. It will be interesting to be in the audience once more, rather than leading an army with my speeches.
