Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[Eurydice's name might have been coincidence -- it wasn't so uncommon that people named their children after myths, right? By Orpheus's presence, and their apparent relationship? That changes things significantly. There's a moment where Maya's eyes narrow faintly, before she smooths her expression once more.

Eurydice's title, suddenly, makes bitter sense.]

The pleasure is all mine, Orpheus-san.

[She gives a little bow.]

[ Orpheus watches with some confusion as Maya's expression changes for just that brief moment, unsure of what to make of it. She moves on quickly enough, though, and he decides not to question it. Lots of people have been acting weird about his name here. It's... probably fine?

He returns the gesture, bowing back even if it's a little unfamiliar to him. ]

The yearbooks are really strange, though, aren't they? I didn't get a good look at them, but they look like they would've been really expensive to print, even if most of the pages are blank. [ What with all the color photographs in them, and all. ] But apparently some of the information in it is wrong, too. You'd think they'd be really careful to get everything right, if they were going to invest so much in them.

I don't know about expensive, but... [Yearbooks are common, after all. Surely it couldn't be anything too outlandish, if most every school offered one. She doesn't comment on that, though. There's something more important to talk about.]

Something was incorrect for you as well?

Not for me, no. But someone else I was exploring with said hers got her age wrong, and some of the stuff she did. She seemed really upset about it.

[ He has the good sense not to name names right away, at least, unsure if Peregrine would want that shared around. He does sound pretty concerned, though. ]

My age was wrong as well. As was someone else I spoke with. It seems to be a common problem.

[Common, or they're just talking about the same person. Thanks Peregrine.]

Oh. Maybe they published it a while ago, when the ages were right?

[ He's assuming it says they're younger than they really are, because that's the explanation that would make the most sense, right? ]

That doesn't explain everything else about them, though. Like where the photographs came from. I don't remember ever having my picture taken, and I don't think Eurydice has either. [ Literally ever. Cameras and film are expensive and unwieldy! You don't get a lot of photographers out in the middle of nowhere. ]

It's an explanation, if we were all older than it said. But... [She shakes her head.] My yearbook claims that I am 17. I won't be that until July.

[At the mention of photos, she simply shrugs.]

My friends are often taking photos of me. And I have been featured in many promotion photographs. It's not so odd for me, at least.

[ Orpheus frowns. Well, it was a good thought, he guesses. ]

Wow, really? [ he asks, sounding duly impressed. He knows cameras are getting more common, but he still doesn't see them all that often. He guesses it would be natural for people who share an interest in photography to flock together, but it's still a little unusual to think about. ] What kind of promotion photos?

Sometimes it is to promote our school. Other times it is to promote a performance. There were many taken before and after the Seisho Festival last school year. As the lead of our play, I was expected to be in a great deal of them.

Oh, you're an actress? [ Orpheus asks, eyes alight with interest. It sounds like she must be pretty good at it, if they're taking photos to promote her plays and she's not even out of school. Or maybe her school is just that prestigious. ]

I've never heard of the Seisho Festival, but what sort of play was it?

In training, at least. [She might be preening. Just a little.]

The Seisho Festival is a yearly celebration of the efforts of every student at the Seisho Music Academy. Each class picks a play to perform at the end of the year festival. The will continue to perfect and perform that play for the three years they spend in the school.

Our play is "Starlight," a tragedy of two lovers torn apart by fate.

[Which, you know. Probably a fucked up story to tell the literal Orpheus but. You know. It's fine.]

[ Orpheus beams at her, always glad to make a fellow artist feel like they're getting their due. ]

Wow, that sounds really intense. You're a musician too, then? If you go to a music academy. [ He looks very excited about that - not just about meeting a fellow musician, although he's always glad when that happens - but someone who's actually trained so formally in the craft is really impressive to him. ] Most of the musicians and actors I've known are self-taught, or learned from older friends. What's it like going to school for that?

[ And don't worry about the tragedy thing it's fine he has no idea what's in store for him. Yet. ]

A vocalist, at least. [Though she can play the piano, which she's pretty sure counts. It's just that everyone she knows can do that too, so..]

It's truly an intense thing. I had to audition and prove myself amongst many others. But truthfully, I had an advantage. My parents were both performers as well. Not only does the craft run in my blood, but I have had them to teach me most of my life.

Still, being surrounded by those that are equally as passionate as myself is inspiring. It pushes me to an entirely new level.

[ Orpheus nods, eyes shining with excitement. ]

My mom taught me a lot of what I know about music and performing too! I didn't go to school for it, though. That sounds really incredible, being around all that talent and people who know how to hone it.

[ Orpheus is not a person prone to envy, but he does have to admit, it sounds nice. He enjoys the simplicity of his life out in the railway town, but that doesn't mean he can't wonder what it would be like to be a classically trained musician in one of the big cities he's visited with Mister Hermes. ]

I'd love to hear you sing something, sometime. If you're comfortable with that, I mean.

I'm sure you're just as incredible.

[She can't imagine not having gone to school, though. Talent was one thing, but if she didn't continue to work for it...

Briefly she thinks of a young woman, a classmate. She blinks hard enough to chase the thought away.]

I would be happy to perform for you. Whenever you might like.

Oh, thanks! I've actually had a lot of different teachers, when it comes to music? Just not really formally.

[ Most of his 'training' comes in the form of musicians passing through town that he begged to teach him new songs or techniques, or sometimes new instruments, if he was lucky. ]

Anyway, I'm not doing anything except waiting right now. If you'd rather do it later, though, I can try to find a lyre and I can play for you in exchange.

Well, variation is key to developing your own style. It will surely leave a unique mark on the world.

[Even if she can't relate, she can still understand that passion.]

Ah, I suppose I could perform something. [She sifts back through her brain, considering the songs she could sing.]

[ Orpheus nods. ] I'm really fortunate to have had so many people who were willing to teach me.

[ In any case, he listens intently when she starts to sing, head cocked to the side slightly. The song reminds him a little bit of some of the famous jazz singers he's familiar with from home, albeit new and unfamiliar in a way that he can't quite put his finger on. He likes it, though, and when she finishes he applauds politely but enthusiastically. ]

You're really good! I can tell you're really passionate about what you do.

I have to be. Without passion, what is there?

[That was what the giraffe had been after, right? Passion and shine? Brilliance on the stage? How could she be a stage girl, or a top star at that, without either option?]

[ Orpheus nods, enthusiastically. ]

Loving something, having passion for it, whether it's a hobby or a job or a person or an ideal, is what makes life so beautiful. If you appreciate what you do and what's around you, it'll always be worthwhile.

[ Which might not be quite what she was getting at, but- ]

You're exactly right.

[Perhaps it shouldn't be so unexpected, hearing that mentality outside of Seisho, but Maya looks pleased nonetheless.]

[ Orpheus beams, glad to hear she feels the same. Some people call him naive for seeing things the way he does, but it's what keeps him going through all the harder times. ]

I hope I'm not assuming too much but - maybe you can give me some advice, on how to improve my singing some time. There's something I've been working on for a really long time, and I can't call it finished until I can do it absolutely perfectly.

[Her expression turns to the thoughtful.]

I've taught a few of my friends when they've missed classes. I shouldn't have any problems giving you a few pointers.

Thanks! I don't know how good a student I'll be - I haven't had any formal training? - so if there's anything I can do to repay you for your time, let me know.

If I think of anything, I'll be sure to let you know.

[But for now, there's nothing on her mind.]
