Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

Yeah, guess you're right...I mean, the only thing I'm really missing otherwise are my goggles.

[He frowns, brushing a hand over the top of his head where he's used to them sitting.]

Aand all my chemistry stuff, but. Doubt they'd want me to have that.

Sounds like that could be fun. What do you do with it - I mean, do you make anything in particular?

Oh, all sorts of things! Adhesives, cleaning solutions, chemicals for lighting up the place, acid-

The possibilities are almost literally endless, depending on what's needed.

Ha! I mean, we really shouldn't light up the place - [since we are all currently trapped inside] - but I can see the rest of that being pretty useful!

[alchemistake]

Oh, no, I mean like- literal light. You know! Like those up there?

[He gestures to the flourescents above them.]

We don't have this sort of thing back home, but I'm working on it.

Oh! Those! Man, back when they first invented those, people went nuts over them. I went to a big public exhibition one time - they set up a whole tower of lights to show it off.

i bet! They'd be huge back home, I can feel it.

[As if Varian minds! He loves hearing people sing, and so far he's found that most of them all can do it. Not just singing for the sake of it either, they can sing pretty damn well.]

Of course! That's the whole point, for me. I'm here to sing stuff and play the guitar, pretty much.

No - not the point of me being here. Just the point of me being...anywhere.

Doesn't that make you, like...a Bard?

Yeah, I guess so!

Not gonna lie, it kinda sounds like it'd be a fun job to have. Getting to go from town to town, playing music and singing for the people...not quite as hands on enough for me, but it's good if you like to entertain people. Or royalty, I guess.

I do like singing to people. Never sang to royalty, though - is that some kind of bard thing?

[alchemistake]

Kinda yeah! Bards are professional storytellers, and a lot of the time they'll be employed by a monarchy to tell the story of their patron.

[He pauses.]

Though...mostly, they want the Bard to praise them and tell stories about all their accomplishments.

Well, what's the point of that? You've gotta be able to tell how things actually were.

[alchemistake]

Come on, you know how the monarchy can be! Some of them, at least. They want to be remembered as great and respectable people, so they'll pay big money to make sure that happens.

[Not that he doesn't respect the royals, he just. Knows how it be sometimes]

If they have to pay for that to happen, do they really deserve it?

[alchemistake]

Probably not.

[He doesn't even hesitate, saying that.]

That's why it's probably a good thing you're not actually a Bard. That way you can sing about whatever you want to!

Yeah. The people I've sung about before didn't always like what I had to say.

[Shrug!]

But that's fine, they had it coming.

[Varian snickers at that.]

You weren't scared of the consequences, huh?

Haha. No, I wasn't.

[But from the rueful way his smile quirks, maybe he ought to have been.]
