Week One

[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?

Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.

If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

Oh yeah, it'd be too cold otherwise. Too much skin, not enough hair, you know. Or feathers, I guess.

[Varian glances from the bed to where Mumble is still standing.]

I guess I can't really talk much, since I've fallen asleep at my desk more times than I can count...

I - [Aha] - have no idea what that is.

[Just being transparent here.]

But I'm guessing it's not very comfortable. ['Desk' as a word just sounds very...hard. Slab-y. Not what you want to curl up and catch some Z's on.] Is it where you do all your inventing?

[If there's anything Varian's likely to push himself to exhaustion doing, he's gambling on that.]

You got it. A desk isn't really comfortble for sleeping at...at all. Really hard, usually made of wood.

[And yet he's frequently face down in a project instead of in an actual bed.]

Actually, uh- yeah! That's a desk over there.

[He points to the single one in their shared dorm.]

Mine's a little longer than that, but same princeple.

[Mumble follows Varian's pointing and shakes his head.]

I don't even know how you can fall asleep on that thing. At least you're sleeping in your nest here, right?

[He's concerned about your back.]

Oh, yeah! My...nest. We call those beds, but, same difference.

Is the rest of this like it is back home for you?

Well...in some ways. But back home I don't live in a building like this. My dad and I have our own home. We don't share it with a bunch of people like we're having to do here.

[Varian pauses, saying that.]

I guess penguins are more used to living in groups, right?

Yeah. I mean - I don't live in anything like this, either, but you probably...you probably already got that.

[Anyone with a basic understanding of animals would.]

I've got my Ma and Pa, but we all live with everybody else in Emperor-land. I can't imagine it being just us.

[alchemistake]

Yeah no, I...imagine it's been a lot for you to get used to, for sure.

[More than, even.]

What do you guys do for shelter, though? You don't just stand out in the open...right?

[Like Mumble WAS sort of just in the corner there...]

No…we pretty much stand out in the open.

[No tools.]

And if it gets too cold, we’ll huddle together for warmth.

[That SOUNDS sad, but...it also makes sense. Penguins seem like quite warm creatures on their own from what Varian's seen, so thinking about having a whole bunch of them packed together in one place...it's probably quite toasty.]

Sounds like penguins have it all figured out. Us humans would be miserable in that kind of environment.

I don't know how you guys live in places like this. No sky, all these walls, being cooped up inside...though I guess that last one is probably just here.

Oh yeah...definitely just here. Even we can't stay indoors forever...we need to see the sun sometimes.

[Or a lot of the time, really. Even Varian's never been inside for this long...]

...I miss it.

Me too. I-I miss being able to look up at the clouds, too. Seeing things in them.

[Even Penguins did that, huh...]

What did you see in them, Mumble?

All kinds of things.

[He sounds a little wistful.]

Penguins, fish, mystic beings...sometimes I thought I saw the great Guin, but [He shrugs.] I just had a lot of free time in class.

[Mystic....wow he had no idea penguins were so philosophical]

What's the great Guin?

[Mumble suddenly clocks that Varian would, of course, not know who that is.]

It's this great penguin in the sky. The elders say it brings us fish...supposedly, and that we all have to follow its way.
