Week One
[Yesterday, everyone woke up in a strange place and realized that they'd been kidnapped, and also that everyone else around them may or may not be kinnies? Wow, what a weird escalation of kin drama! Given what some people have seen of Spongebob's freaky arm thing, though, maybe it's not that at all?
Your Assistant Director, Hester, showed off her stuff and immediately had her life threatened by Lumpy Space Princess, who got her life threatened right back. Maybe you should keep that in mind if you decide to pay Hester any more visits! She won't be making another public appearance this week, but as promised, she'll be available for visits and consultation in the Principal's Office during business hours.
If you don't want to chat with Hester, there's always the school to explore! Some of you might also be receiving mysterious coins next to your bedside this week - those must be useful for something, right? There's lots to do, and you all seem like a group who can make your own fun, so enjoy your first week of school!]

[Oh hey, here's Elizabeth, tuning a guitar.]
I was wondering who was playing that music...!
no subject
[Varian has the courtesy to stop in his playing for a moment, having been so engrossed that he didn't realize anyone else was in the room.]
Sorry- I'm not interrupting anything, am I?
no subject
[adjusting the guitar]
You play quite decently. What was that song?
no subject
[He puts a hand on the face of the piano for a moment, patting it there.]
Never thought I'd be learning an instrument until dad put me up to it, but I've picked up a few things by ear since then.
no subject
[She adjusts the tuning a little more.]
Actually, the song reminded me a little of some of the music they play at the Theresienwiese every autumn. They drink beer then, too.
[A bit awkwardly does a few notes as an example.]
...I'm still working on it.
no subject
[He chuckles, propping his chin up in his hand.]
And yeah...I mean, I don't think there are ever going to be any practical uses for me with playing the piano in life, but it's pretty cool to be able to do it at all.
no subject
[She looks down at this.]
My papa...I was born in a country called Bavaria, and the zither is an instrument that the common people play in the Alps-the mountains that Bavaria and Austria and France and Italy share. I guess you could say the Alps are something we all share-likewise the zither.
A lot of people in my station tend to look down on the kind of music that was made for the zither, and the people who played it, because it wasn't refined or classic. It was peasant music-folk music. But my papa came to appreciate that music of-he considered it important to try and preserve it, and to nurture a love for it. So he started learning how to play the zither and became a master of it-he's even composed a lot of music for people to play!
And...that's how I learned how to play the zither. That's why...I'd like to continue playing that, or at least the music he taught me however I can. I want to honor the country I come from, and...the things my papa taught me. Because...people shouldn't look down on something for being 'common' or 'peasant', because then you might miss something beautiful. Something...something that's free of expectations!
If that makes sense.
no subject
[It makes him wish his own Dad had a passion he was dedicated to like that. Sure, he's dedicated to the village and the people living in it, which is important in its own right...but that doesn't do as much to fulfill him as a person, does it?]
And yeah, it does make sense! Of course you'd want to keep up with what your dad taught you. I'd be surprised if you didn't enjoy it with how much it sounds like he loved the zither.
no subject
My father has taught me so many things. The most important thing is to enjoy life, and the things you love to do. The things that make you happy. That's what life is meant to be about in the end, after all, isn't it?
no subject
[He's glad that her father is so supportive. If only he could say the same...]
Maybe I can take some of that advice to heart, when we get out of here. My own dad could learn a thing or two from yours.

no subject
[That is unfortunate.]
But you're doing good things for the world, or trying to. I think that's a noble cause, even if your father may not understand what you're doing.
no subject
[It's partially a lie. His father...he still wants to make him proud. But instead of that stopping him, it just spurns Varian on to work twice as hard.]
no subject
Well, as long as you're happy...and...I'm certain your father will one day understand that you're only doing what you love, and that there's nothing wrong with what you're doing.
As long as you're yourself, in the end, things will work out, right?
[:D?]no subject
Yeah...yeah, you're probably right. I just need to try not to think about it so hard. Things will work out.
