Week Three

[Last week, some shit went down! Salieri's scene went off without a hitch, but the good mood didn't last. The first motive was a bit of a doozy, and yet it didn't even have anything to do with the eventual accidental death of Mumble Happyfeet! At least Sissi was already pretty much dating Death anyway, right? She's probably fine, wherever she is.

This week, new menus have been posted in the cafeteria. But, more importantly, it seems that other new information has emerged. Everyone wakes on Sunday with some new memories - or are they old ones? - floating around in their heads. Maybe there was something to your discussions of time travel after all. Maybe there was someting to the Wizard's knowledge of the future.

Regardless, you're still stuck in here. At least there's some new places to explore this week. Maybe you'll find something helpful.]

Correct. Major and Minor are based on how they sound. There are different types of minor scales, but for now, we'll stick to natural minor, which is what you played.

You can really hear the difference if I play A natural minor--[he does so, on the all white keys, up and back down]-- and then A major. [again, eight notes up and back down, this time incorporating some black keys]

Ah, well, our perceptions and others' perceptions of us can certainly change over time. Perhaps he changes after I meet him.

It isn't loaded, right? I'm not familiar with guns, I'm afraid. But if you think it's wiser not to stockpile them all in one place, then I'd be glad to lock it up in my trunk for you.

[Angus stands up and runs after the roomba.]

One of the music rooms! The choir one, we don't use it much!

I think the dorm assignments are mostly a formality at this point. But it might be good for the children to let go of even the facade of formality, for a night.

[He calls them children in the most affectionate tone possible. He picks up his book and settles in against the headboard, leaving the curtains open to let the light in so he can read.]

I hear it... So, it's not just white keys are major and black keys are minor. Huh. Okay.

As he picks up the scattered pages and straightens them, he takes a glance - what was Antonio working on?]

It's getting late, my friend. I think the others are having a party in the library tonight, if you'd like.

Exactly. Each key on the piano represents a different note. Now, differentiating between the types of scales is determined by how far it is one from one note to the next as you go up and down the scale. This distance is measured in what we call half-tones and whole-tones.

For example, if take a pair of white keys that have a black key in between them--for example, A and B here--and play them: [he moves to indicate on the piano, playing the two notes back and forth a couple of times]--that is a whole tone. However, if I take a pair of white keys that don't have any black keys in between them, for example B and C--[he plays those next, going back and forth]--that is a half tone. Similarly, going from a white key to the black key next to it--[he demonstrates, going from C to the black key just above it]--is also a half tone.

So--[and he pulls over a piece of blank paper and a pencil]--for a major scale--if you would play the keys for me as we go, C-major is, starting with C to D...[and as she plays the scale, he'll say and write: whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half, along with the letter names on either side.]

[Benjamin will find a sheet of music--but the notes have been written, erased, scribbled out, written, scribbled out again. There's no order to them, none of the neat lines that Benjamin would recognize from the music that Salieri had hand-written for him to learn off of for the performance.]

Hm? Oh, well...no, thank you. I think I...perhaps I almost have it. I just need a little more time.

Well I hope she takes after her mother more than me.

[Look at him - he's a big dude.]

...Would you like to see a picture of her?

[Without really waiting for an answer, he takes out the ambrotype photograph of Lucy and Johanna, holding it out for Varian to see.]

[ As Salieri explains, Peregrine's face scrunches up a little, as she takes everything in and processes it. She watches him eagerly, eyes following his hands. The moment he asks her to start playing, she does so, no complaints, mouthing along whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. ]

Whoa... And you just memorize this? For every scale?

A what? [ asks Orpheus, wholly oblivious, again. ]

[ Orpheus nods along. ]

I don't really know. I guess it couldn't be from... missing time, like how some of us have been dreaming things that could be the future? If it doesn't make sense for the letter to exist in the first place.

[ He feels more comfortable bringing up the idea now that it sounds like it's not a real possibility. ]

Maybe it's just not worth worrying about. If I get another one out of the machine, do you want me to bring it to you? Or just get rid of it?

[ Orpheus nods. ]

Maybe! It also sounds like this book was written a long while after his time, and I know sometimes stories about people change, depending on who's doing the telling and how long it's been.

[ You have no control, who lives, who dies, who tells your story. Orpheus goes quiet for a second, thinking, before saying, apropos of almost nothing, ]

I wish I'd gotten to meet my aunts? Not just, because of all the people they got to know and work with, but. In general.

[Varian laughs, watching the lizard slowly scaling the tower of books.]

Well in that case, you're gonna need a wall around the perimeter. Just so everybody knows where her territory ends.

[Varian looks back over at the skins she'd been working on.]

Sorry, I keep...circling back around to my Dad somehow, but this kind of stuff makes me think about him.

I try. I still don't think I could be the sort of queen my father hoped I would be, but... for now, I just want to focus on others. It's... nice, having the power to really take care of the people who need it.

snatching up a broom as they give chase, in case he needs to use it to push the Roomba someplace. Probably away from them, preferably.

It's got to be pretty comical, seeing as how the device is moving barely at walking speed while they're chasing after it like it might escape.

He'll run up ahead to make sure the music room is open.]
