Week Two

[Last week, no murder happened! Instead, a lot of students started work on Salieri's school play, which sounds pretty cool even though it's gonna be short, several people destroyed Bigfoot and got a few mysterious clues, and Orpheus started a fire in the kitchen! All in all, not a bad first week!

Though some people might have gone to talk to Hester, she hasn't made any more public announcements. There's some new papers posted up around the cafeteria, but it looks like it's just your upcoming lunch schedule. Seems like nothing's driving you towards Rule Five except, perhaps, all of the kidnapping and how criminally boring some of you are finding the school. Maybe the Balladeer is right, and you really can just wait this out? Only time will tell!]

I can imagine the current Head of State being particularly upset about it. Killing another person is unforgivable under normal circumstances, but someone with such a high status? Even more so.

Ah, well. He doesn't decide what plays get made.

[Who was that, Bush? Must've been. The Balladeer doesn't necessarily hold the presidency in any specially high regard - they just shed a little blood - but it's murder, which is bad enough.]

All the actual deaths were a long time ago, anyway. No one even remembers two of the three. I guess Reagan getting shot was fairly recent...

How...many times did someone attempt to assassinate your Heads of State? [he's a little unnerved to be honest] Do they have no fear in their souls?

We've got a pretty strong culture of nutjobs with guns.

[violentenvies]

That is...both unfortunate and unsettling, considering you seem to have had so many of these "nutjobs" that there's enough to make an entire show about them.

Yeah, it's not great. But I guess it's hard to take the guns away from the nutjobs.

[He's a guy from a play, he's not actually that up on the current political climate. But there must be some reason no one's done it, right?]

I can only imagine. Not wanting to let go of something that gives them even the illusion of such power...

[The Balladeer sings, in a tone that isn't quite his own:]

What a wonder is a gun!
What a versatile invention!
First of all, when you've a gun - everybody pays attention!

[He smiles a little.]

Not one of my songs, but I hear them when I'm not onstage.

[Salieri listens to the verse, blinking once--but then huffs at the explanation]

So they simply want attention. [he snorts, slightly] I suppose that makes sense, considering their targets.

At the end of the day, yeah. Some of them had real political motivations too - but you don't do something like that just because of that.

[Plenty of people are passionate about political causes without bringing murder into it!]

Now Charlie - the guy who sang that - he was just nuts. Got mad he wasn't made the ambassador to France. There was no actual reason he would've been, he was basically just some guy.

That is complete nonsense. And a man like that was able to get a firearm so easily while escaping the madhouse?

I don't think he was ever committed. I mean, he was in a cult for a while...

Now that does make sense. Was his attempt successful at all?

Yeah, he killed President Garfield. Shot him right in a train station. He wasn't president too long, but he seemed decent from what I know of him - big on governmental reform.

[violentenvies]

Then that's unfortunate that his killer would be driven to such an action.

Yeah. Well, they pushed a lot of his agenda through after his death. That sort of thing usually happens - they kill a President thinking they'll be some kind of hero, and then he's just a martyr and everyone loves him.

[He's not upset about it; he just thinks it's sort of...obvious? They ought to have known.]

That's exactly how it happened with Lincoln. Booth still can't accept it, and that was over a century ago.

So their purpose was a lost cause in the first place.

[The Balladeer snorts in "mocking the Confederacy".]

Yeah, pretty much. Didn't mean a nickel.

One would think someone would learn from such displays after such time.

People think they're special.
