Week Two

[Last week, no murder happened! Instead, a lot of students started work on Salieri's school play, which sounds pretty cool even though it's gonna be short, several people destroyed Bigfoot and got a few mysterious clues, and Orpheus started a fire in the kitchen! All in all, not a bad first week!

Though some people might have gone to talk to Hester, she hasn't made any more public announcements. There's some new papers posted up around the cafeteria, but it looks like it's just your upcoming lunch schedule. Seems like nothing's driving you towards Rule Five except, perhaps, all of the kidnapping and how criminally boring some of you are finding the school. Maybe the Balladeer is right, and you really can just wait this out? Only time will tell!]

[Well... That takes her just enough aback that she is silent for a long moment. When she finally speaks, her voice is quiet.]

For what, Salieri-sensei?

I can understand now why what I asked you to do yesterday evening seemed patronizing. I see that you have a far more specific goal in mind than even I suspected, with much more on the line than I could ever conceive of. I apologize for not realizing how serious of a competition you were participating in, and therefore looking at your situation without knowing all the pieces of it.

[he lifts a hand, placing it over the left side of his chest and bows his head, shoulders curling in and bending slightly at the waist in a partial bow]

For that, I deeply apologize.

[he straightens then, looking at her again, seriously]

Therefore, if you still wish it, I shall take the time to reevaluate your performance, and offer you what insights that I may to help you improve.

[It's... rare that Maya looks guilty, at least when it comes to matters of her determination. But for being a man holding only a scant few pieces of her puzzle, he had been doing all he could to assist her. She blinks at Salieri, silent for a long few moments.

And then she steps forward. She lays a hand against his shoulder, attempting to nudge him back upward.]

Before today, I was under the impression that I could tell no one the truth of what I was doing. The orchestrator of this tournament told us that we would be disqualified if we did. But... from the conversations I have had with Angus, and the presence of the photo I received, it would seem that forces beyond this competition are aware of what's going on.

Honesty... will hardly harm me anymore than I already have been.

[violentenvies]

[he straightens, then, at her urging, listening for a moment--and there's a relief that he feels when she agrees to tell him more. He's managed to choose the right words, so it seems, though none of it shows on his face through his focused expression.]

Then, in that case, if you would not mind illuminating further, I will do my utmost to help you win your competition.

Truthfully, I don't know much more than I have already told you. The competition was explained to me, with a promise that it would begin soon. I have not met my fellow competitors yet.

Though...

[She pauses, frowning deeply.] I spoke with Angus just after these photos were given to us. Without... revealing his secret, his photo contained a... creature that appeared to be adorned in the uniform that we were given to wear during competition. That includes this jacket.

I... don't know what it means.

[violentenvies]

[That'll garner a frown from him as well] That is...rather strange.

Did Angus recognize the creature at all?

[mayavericks]

Not at all. At first we thought it all connected -- my duels and his photo. But... the creature orchestrating my own trials is certainly not that powerful.

[violentenvies]

Oh? [she'll get a bit of an arched eyebrow for that]

What sort of creature is orchestrating your trials?

[mayavericks]

[She dips her head, maybe a little sheepish.]

A Kirin. A... Giraffe.

[a moment, and then he huffs out a sigh]

Somehow, not the strangest thing I've heard here.

Is there anything...unique or special about this Giraffe that allows it to run this competition?

[mayavericks]

You mean other than inexplicably being able to summon me to its chambers in the dead of night?

[violentenvies]

[wtf]

I...[that is SO WEIRD but just...forging ahead]...yes. Aside from that.

[mayavericks]

Well. It can also talk?

[violentenvies]

I see. And has the ability to give the person who wins this competition access to any stage in the world.

[mayavericks]

I know it is difficult to believe. If I had not witnessed it myself, I would think it nonsense as well.

[violentenvies]

[he huffs out a sigh at that] To be quite honest, there are many strange things that have presented themselves to me here that I could never have imagined possible before now. Somehow, a talking giraffe holding a high-stakes singing competition fits in right beside the time and space travel.
