Week Two

[Last week, no murder happened! Instead, a lot of students started work on Salieri's school play, which sounds pretty cool even though it's gonna be short, several people destroyed Bigfoot and got a few mysterious clues, and Orpheus started a fire in the kitchen! All in all, not a bad first week!

Though some people might have gone to talk to Hester, she hasn't made any more public announcements. There's some new papers posted up around the cafeteria, but it looks like it's just your upcoming lunch schedule. Seems like nothing's driving you towards Rule Five except, perhaps, all of the kidnapping and how criminally boring some of you are finding the school. Maybe the Balladeer is right, and you really can just wait this out? Only time will tell!]

Of course. No telling when they're going to stop feeling generous...or if this food's tainted in any way. So, we better go over all of it. Like last week.

[ Eurydice gives Peregrine a short, businesslike nod. ]

You're right. I hadn't considered tainted food, to be honest. This refrigerator is incredible.

[ She is giving that fridge the proper respect it deserves! ]

Fridge is... It's...pretty standard where I'm from? [ Tactful. Be tactful, Orpheus said they were both not used to all this. ] Probably'll keep most things, but if we start to get too complacent, they could pull the rug out from under us.

[ Eurydice doesn't look offended, so good job Peregrine!! You successfully accomplished tact. Eurydice only bothers to do that maybe 30 percent of the time. ]

Good to know.

[ With that, Eurydice opens up the fridge, giving the food inside a decent inspection, making notes as she goes. Eventually, she pipes up again: ]

So, are you on the road a lot?

[ Most people here seem to think traveling is a luxury. Based on the degree she cares about food safety, Eurydice suspects Peregrine might think otherwise. ]

[ Peregrine looks up from the cabinet she's kneeling by in confusion. ]

What? No, nothing like that. I've never even left the US. Do I...seem like a traveler?

I haven't either. [ The United States is a big place! ] But I learned that it was important to do stuff like this on the road. Figured that's where you learned it, too.

[comeandfindme]

...I learned it from someone else who learned it on the road. [ She smiles lightly. ] I'm really just a beginner at all this...but Howl's taught me everything he knows — or, like, at least everything I've been able to pick up. You gotta know how to fend for yourself in the world.

[ Eurydice returns the smile. Hers is small, but there's a hint of camraderie there, too. ]

You do. I'm glad you had Howl, though. [ Better than making mistakes and learning things the hard way. ]

He's like the only person who's got faith that I can make it.

[ ...Her smile fades to something else, something concerned and thoughtful. ]

...I bet he's worried.

[ Oh, no. Well, at least Peregrine's got someone looking out for her. That's good. ]

Mm. Well, if he knows you can make it, then I'm sure he knows you'll be back eventually. You seem to know what you're doing. Just keep your wits about you, and I'm sure you'll be able to survive this place fine.

[comeandfindme]

[ After a moment, she nods. ]

Yeah. ...Yeah, Howl'll be the only one who'll think I don't need some kinda rescue. He'll know I'm good enough to do it myself.

[ And just like that, she's back to taking inventory, pushing the unsettled feelings aside. ]
