Week Two

[Last week, no murder happened! Instead, a lot of students started work on Salieri's school play, which sounds pretty cool even though it's gonna be short, several people destroyed Bigfoot and got a few mysterious clues, and Orpheus started a fire in the kitchen! All in all, not a bad first week!

Though some people might have gone to talk to Hester, she hasn't made any more public announcements. There's some new papers posted up around the cafeteria, but it looks like it's just your upcoming lunch schedule. Seems like nothing's driving you towards Rule Five except, perhaps, all of the kidnapping and how criminally boring some of you are finding the school. Maybe the Balladeer is right, and you really can just wait this out? Only time will tell!]

[Hey, another jacket! The Balladeer approaches with a smile on his face - Maya had been there when he got his jacket back, after all, even if the moment was rather tainted by unexpected firearms. But it quickly dies when he sees more of her reaction.]

Is everything okay?

[mayavericks]

Everything is fine. [But boy, she sure does sound like she's speaking through grit together teeth.]

Just some confusion. I mistook this jacket as my own, when I was clearly incorrect.

[.....ooookay, well that's visibly untrue.]

O...kay. Is there something wrong with it...?

[mayavericks]

[Just casually motions to the severed cord.]

If it's broken, it means that the duelist who wore it lost their challenge. I would never lose. Therefore, it cannot be mine.

[tellthestory]

[...okay. On one hand, the Balladeer is naturally primed to observe (and point out in song) the lies that people tell themselves. But on the other...he actually likes Maya. He can't quite restrain his skepticism, but he does push back the instinctual response.]

If you say so. [She knows, doesn't she? That that's not true?] I'm not sure I understand - you do duels?

[mayavericks]

[She grimaces. She's already said too much. Who could say where the Giraffe had his ears.]

It's how we practice our combat proficiency. We prefer our fights to look realistic, after all.

[tellthestory]

...well, it's not so bad to lose then, right? I'm sure everybody gets cast as the loser in a fight sometimes.

[You know, in a play, as an actor for whom the show is not real. See, he's getting it!]

[mayavericks]

It's not... Quite like that.

[She motions him off.]

It's nothing to worry about. I appreciate your words.

...okay.

[...mmm. He doesn't like it.]

Do you want to...run lines, or something? I'm no Ben, but we can pretend for a minute.

[mayavericks]

Ah.

[That... would actually be a good idea. Rattled as she is, she'd nearly forgotten her upcoming duty.]

Will you take the role of Danaus, then?

Sure! I know the lines.

[Being from his particular background, he's seemed to just sort of make it his business to know the entire show, even if he's not really doing anything with that. His own lines are pretty much entirely solo, though, with Sissi just providing instrumentals; maybe it would still do him some good to bounce them off of people, but he's so used to working alone that it hasn't occurred to him.]

Not really in my range, but it's just for practice!

[mayavericks]

Good. We can practice yours after.

[She straightens herself up, bundling the jacket beneath her arm as she does.]

Wherever you wish to practice, then. Though -- might I recommend the choir room?

[tellthestory]

Sounds good to me!

[Let's-a go!]

[Off to the choir room she goes. She... does stop to pick up the jacket though. You know. Just in case.]

[Hm...

Well. He doesn't say anything about it.

The Balladeer follows her lead to the choir room, where he'll sit down at the piano; no reason he can't play some melody along with the lines.]

This must be something real actors do all the time, huh?

[mayavericks]

As opposed to mysterious narrators? [She pulls up a chair beside him and nods.]

We do it all of the time.

[He chuckles.]

I guess you would. I've only ever known one real actor, but he was the worst. Just kinda tuned him out when he'd talk about acting.

[mayavericks]

You would hate Seisho, then. We live and breathe our performances. It's our livelihood, after all. I can't imagine you would enjoy us all droning on about it.

[tellthestory]

Oh, it wasn't that, it was all the murder and racism!

[The acting talk was annoying, but mostly in the sense that it's just another way Booth puffs himself up. Like he's the greatest guy in the world just because he's done some Shakespeare.]

I'm not really any better, am I? Everything's about a show to me.

[mayavericks]

Ah. Of course. [She makes a face]

In any case, it seems we have plenty in common. We love our shows, even if it is different parts of them.

[tellthestory]

That's true.

[The Balladeer's feelings towards his original show are a little complicated, but it was still home. It's hard not to feel at least a little fond of it.]

Anyway! Let's do lines! [And they run lines, I guess, I don't know the lines]
