[ Something is burning. Something is burning, that's never good. With a light air of panic, Riley hurries into the kitchen, expecting to have to like, do some damage control. But. Alright. ]

Heeeeeyyy, Ariel. Whatcha doin' there...?

[Ariel glances up at the sound of footsteps, then back down to his work. He's confident he won't let the fire get out of control but... he still doesn't want to redirect his attention for too long.]

Ah, nothing that you need to worry yourself over. [He glances to the remaining pile of paper, shuffles about, and then holds a sheet up. It's got Riley's handwriting on it!]

Ensuring that our words cannot be used against us, that's all.

You--

[ Automatically, Riley reaches out as she sees her own handwriting, but then it clicks just what he's doing. ]

Oh. Ohh, that's...incredibly smart, actually. To make sure the Phantom can't get his hands on them.

[Ariel looks so proud of her.]

Of course, this assumes that you can trust me with the information. Which was a heavy ask in and of itself.

Well. At least for me, it's not like I wrote down anything particularly...sensitive, I would say.

[ At least, she doesn't...think so? ]

How are you going to remember all of it, without having it written down?

Perhaps not. [He shrugs.] But as I have told the others, what we may find completely mundane may be the sole tie that connects us together.

As for how I manage to recall it all... I have always had a particularly remarkable memory. I can still remember my home and those that lived there, clear as day. Recalling information has always... come easily.

Is it like aaaa photographic memory, or something like that?

I suppose you would know better than I. [What's a photograph.]

It's been immensely beneficial since arriving here. Imagine if I could not remember the proper ratios for the acids I've been making

You don't know what a photographic memory... It's like a photogra- wait, you don't know what a photograph is?

[Ah, Ariel looks a little embarrassed. Not knowing things is hard.]

I am afraid I am not familiar, no.

[ She's a bit surprised; she should've expected him to be one of the people with less of an idea of modern technology, but it just never occurred to her. ]

It's like... There's something called a camera, and it can take a moment in time, like...like a picture, like someone's drawn it, but it's instantaneous, and it can freeze it forever, so you can always look at it.

Is that true? [Riley has no reason to lie to him, and considering everything else he's come across, this is the least surprising.]

How big are they? And the images they create -- are they large as well?

Oh, modern ones are about... [ She mimes about the size of a digital camera, small and compact. ] And you can print the pictures out to be pretty big!

But, um, there are ones that just give you the picture too? They're older, but some people like them. They're, like... [ Larger, more clunky. That's what she's miming. ] And the pictures are about [ insert basic Polaroid picture here ] this big.

It sounds like the portraits royals would spend hours sitting for. [All that convenience in a tiny package? Why wasn't he born in the future.]

Are these just readily available, or are they reserved only for the upper echelons?

Oh, you can just buy them. [ A light, small little chuckle, slightly self-conscious. ] Some are, um, more expensive...but most everyone's got a camera of some kind.

Everyone. [His sigh is almost dreamy. Almost.] I believe I was born in the wrong era, Riley. That is the only possible answer to anything.

I kind of suspected you were a bit of an old-timer, from the uh, survey I handed out. [ With the big worries about lighting things on fire over, Riley's going to get herself a snack, which is. Why she came into the kitchen to begin with. Hello fridge. ] Are you unfamiliar with like, all the technology here? Washing machines, the fridge, the stove...?

[He glances from the fridge to the dishwasher, and then down at the floor. It's like a child being scolded, almost.]

You are correct. I might have... put some food in the dishwasher, believing it might cook it.

[ She has the fridge open. She is retrieving some kind of fruit, like...apples, she's looking for apples. She is very glad her face is hidden because she can't help but stifle a laugh. ]

In the dishwasher? Oh, no. How did that turn out...?

[Most people have laughed at the story at this point. He's just accepted it.] Horrifically soggy and utterly inedible. [At least he can laugh at himself.] Just as one might expect.

[He glances over at Riley.]

What are you having?

Oh, just an apple or two. ...This place sucks, but, at least we're being fed!

[ Positivity!! ...Maybe. ]

But of course. How else can we accomplish the cruel task we've been set to.

[Oops. He's raining on the parade.]

It's a shame I was never good at cooking. At least not anything more than game over a fire.

[ Haaa, it's like a constant drum in her head: positivity, positivity, positivity— ]

You can't? Not even, like, pasta? Everyone can boil water.

Ah, I suppose that can be managed, but making the pasta itself, from the beginning -- [He shakes his head.]

But yes, I can certainly boil water!

Oh, well, that's why you just get it in boxes. [ A beat. ] ...Do you. Have boxed pasta, where you're from...?

[ The things Anne knows and doesn't know confuse her so Riley has to be sure now. ]
