[Six weeks later, and eleven performers remain.

The opera house is much the same when Monday morning dawns this week. It seems you've truly gone as high as you can go - there is no fifth floor, and no sign of any other new areas. The air has grown colder, like perhaps someone failed to adjust the heating for the winter weather that's supposedly happening just outside. Javert and Astarte's stars are still firmly affixed to their doors; it seems you might have to try a little harder to learn their secrets.

One more night, and then I'm planning on passing out for, like, a week at the very least.

Same here. Going without sleep is... not fun. Very not fun. I had something, but then I lost it. Too tired.

Yeah. Fair warning, if I see you start to nod off, I'm going to like... shove you or something.

You're so... like, mild. I told Seymour I would punch him in the face.

Thank you for not punching me. But I wouldn't punch you except maybe as a last resort. And not in the face. Maybe the shoulder.

[She rubs at her face, laughing despite herself.]

At least nobody got stuck on a floor alone. That would've sucked.

Yeah, it would have. I can't imagine getting stuck alone. I mean... I'm used to being alone, but being stuck alone this week would be terrible.

...That sucks. I mean, the whole being used to being alone thing. You didn't have, like, hell servants or whatever?

Not really. None I could talk to, anyway. Especially after dad fired my tutor.

...I'm sorry. I know what that's like. I mean, not my tutor getting fired, I didn't have a tutor—

No. I mean, not if you don't want to talk about it. I mean, no, that's not what I meant either. Kinda? I mean - I'm sorry, I'm really tired.

No, it's okay, I mean I just... I don't know, I want to know more about you? Just, um. In general.

Like I want you to talk about the alone thing, if you want to talk about it. I can handle a not happy talk

...Okay. Well, um - god, where to start. How much did you pay attention to the trial when, um - you know.

[When her brother straight up murdered a teenage girl, yikes.]

Not a... whole lot? I tried, but those first couple trials I was kind of lost. But Gabe was your... brother, right?

Um, well, kind of. I mean, technically yes, but... He died before I was born.

Oh... this didn't look like your first time meeting him, though.

Uh, well, that's... I mean, again, it technically was? I mean, I'd never, like, honest to god seen him or talked to him before this place, but...

I mean, back home it had been eighteen years, but if there's one thing I can say about him, it's that he's really good at - sticking around, and never leaving, ever.

[this explanation might make sense if she wasn't sleep deprived and screaming internally, but here we are]

Okay, so like. Imagine you're from, like, a human family that's supposed to care about each other? Like, this is the expected norm and all. So, like, before you're even born, your mother - you know, I don't think you've ever mentioned her. How do demons reproduce? No, wait, not the point. Um... Where was I? My mom?

Your mom, in your normal human family. Which is a concept I know a thing or two about, so don't worry.

Right. Yes. So, like, before you're even born, your parents have another kid that passes away, and both of your parents are understandably really fucked up over this? Because that's a really, really shitty thing to happen to anyone, ever.

So after a year of, like, completely not being able to cope with it, your mom and dad are like, hey, let's have another kid! This will definitely help us move on! Except that is actually a horrible idea, because that's not how it works, at all.

[A pause. She's been talking progressively faster as she goes on, and she takes a second to just... Breathe. Deflate a little.]
