[Varian is…struggling visibly, that much is plain. He’s managing to keep himself in one piece for Rina’s sake, but even then it’s clear that he doesn’t know what he should be doing. Not that any of them truly do.]

Yeah…yeah.

[That awful trial room. They’re going to have to go back. They’re going to have to vote on someone.

Someone else is going to die.]

Do you think, one of us…?

[He didn’t see the body or the other evidence, so he has no idea what the implications around Connor’s death in particular are yet.]

[What a question to ask, and yet more than warranted, considering the situation.

Salieri pauses at that, lips pressing into a line a bit, brow furrowing]

Truthfully, I...I don't know. I'm holding onto the hope that this was another accident, or something else that went wrong. [Salieri didn't stick around to check the body; he's relying on others for that. In fact, he didn't get a good glimpse at all]

We won't know until we've discussed it.

[Varian’s just going to sit down now, next to Rina. He’s starting to feel a little dizzy thinking about it.

[ Rina's just still looking right into her lap and didn't move much save to acknowledge Salieri with a nod but

When Varian sits down next to her and she can tell he's having a rough time despite trying to hide it she squeezes his hand even tighter. To reassure him as much as reassure herself. ]

It...certainly is. [it's an unsettling thought; a pattern where there shouldn't be. A horrifying one. He resists the urge to rub his face, before dropping down to a knee in front of the two of them so he can be on their level]

Whatever happens after this, whatever comes of it...we'll ford this river together. You're not alone here, no matter how terrifying it seems.

[Varian bows his head slightly, looking at Salieri with eyes concealing all of the hurt he's feeling right now. Not just for Connor's sake, but...for everyone. He can still hear Peregrine's crying, even if he was only in the room for a moment.

And, well. Since he's holding one of Rina's hands already, he'll offer his other out to Salieri.]
