[Raoul has not forgotten that he has made a promise to Princess Anna - namely, to check the men's bathroom for cameras. The idea that the management might be spying on their every move makes his skin crawl, but peering into a bathroom, even one with communal showers, was absolutely deplorable.

Since he's looking pretty thoroughly in here, if the bathroom contains anything unusual or strange, he's bound to find it - or accidentally walk in on you in the shower. Uh, sorry about that in advance.]

[I mean technically speaking Hugo goes into a weird amount of detail about where the sister and the youngest kid ended up and what their daily routine was like at that point in time (fuck the other six I guess they vanished entirely) but Valjean never encounters any of them again in his life so it sort of amounts to the same thing???

...yes, I was. And with a ticket of parole, I found no work or shelter either. It is...easier to understand, now that it is more distant, how people may fear an ex-convict. Yet, if a man cannot get an honest job, and the inns refuse his money, is it really any surprise that so many return to crime?
