[ She was about to offer something to help him feel better, that she's never been any good at it, but that. That makes her pause. ]

She's... [ Riley sighs as she follows his line of sight. ] She's another girl on my team. Friends, that's a bit more...complicated.

[Aston. And here he is, wishing he had the guy's confidence, the never-fear that he could think his way out of it...]

[ A smile similarly wry rises to her face. ]

Oh, she'd probably show me how. I've never been great, and... It's her namesake, see. Chess surely knows how to play. [ She taps a finger on the table, idly. ] ...I thought maybe setting this up'd show the Phantom his stupid offer doesn't mean anything to me. That's all.

Realization forms on his face as she speaks, and for a moment, he wonders if he should leave. At the same time, though...]

That's right. Just because you don't get along with someone all the time doesn't mean you want them...erased.

It's not even that I don't get along with her, she just-- [ Nope, no. Riley shakes her head. ] Not important. The point is. I'm captain. It's my job to make sure everyone...gets along. Whatever issues, that doesn't matter. Not out on the field, not on a team.

[ So. She's kind of pissed! About this whole thing! ]

[But he gets the feeling he's not being chased away - even subtly - so he makes to pull up a chair]

Oh, no, I love being captain! It's all I've worked toward for...more than six years now. It's an honor, to be put in that position, to have that responsibility. I can be a role model, for the whole school.

[ And, from the puff of enthusiasm, it seems she really does mean this! ]

[ She idly knocks over another chess figure, this time a rook, towards the picture. Chess-the-girl doesn’t react. ]

Teaching's different. This was something else for the college. We worked with a guy named Aston Wise- ran his own company, huge into tech.

[He'll start picking up some of the knocked-over figures - not to set up, but to examine curiously]

So, like...an internship, Dr. Browning? [ oh isn't she polite, adorable. ] For someone you clearly weren't a fan of?

Why did you need to cooperate with a tech company, anyway? Did you work at a...really science-y college?

I...did. [He clears his throat] Things came up, so I'm not teaching right now.

[ Oops. The queen that she's poking at falls as she pokes it a bit too hard in her shock. ]

Don't worry about it. [He manages a shaky smile, and-] Saving the future's a good enough reason to take time off, right?
