Week Six

[Last week, in It's Curtains, the weather changed, and with it your fortune in Dads. Discord took Salieri out - or perhaps Salieri took Discord out - and left the survivors with that much less impulse control. Nonetheless, a visit from a new friend might have provided a little bit of much-needed hope?

On Sunday morning, you'll find that the other side of the second floor has opened up - as well as the actual intended path to reach the roof garden. You can finally stop climbing up that rope every time you want to have a picnic or secret lover's rendezvous!

Outside, the weather seems to have calmed down. It's sunny again, with rather a lot of clouds. Though it's warm, the atmosphere seems very...still.]

[ The mention of Janis gets her to look away, but she doesn't pull away. She can't tell him they had a fight, a big fight, and that she wasn't ready to talk to her again. But the sentiment of it all washes over her. She sniffles slightly, as she tries to swallow the tears down. ]

I'm just so tired. [ That fails, and they fall as she hangs her head. ]

Then we start now. To climb such a height, you need the proper upper body strength, and there are plenty of tools to help us here! Come, I'll bring a mattress and the tool, and we shall meet outside.

[Small detour: Angus wanders to the drawers and pulls each one open. Eventually, he finds some thick string.]

Nails and hammers are downstairs. [...] I will be back.

[Ohhhh that really sucks. There goes Angus' appetite, replaced by a need for several glasses of water. At least he can lie on the cafeteria tables and imagine all the better food he's eating so far.]

The gods of our universes can speak with them. If they refuse to deal with mortals, they still must answer to other deities.

[Even Angus' world doesn't commune with the higher realms often; he's lucky he has the Hootsman as a bridge between the mortal and immortal realm. As long as he knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy...]

[His voice is a low, soft rumble, one that comes as much from his chest as it does from his mouth.]

'Please, God, take me instead. Let me save them. Let me do something right.'

[He takes a slow, deep breath.]

[After the meeting is over, Benjamin approaches Peregrine with concern.

He remembers how she stiffened when he touched her, before (can't blame her, even after everything others have said, in a way he's afraid that maybe she can see the blood on his hands), so he only does so briefly, now, at the same time that he speaks, to alert her to his presence.]

Let's get you that cup of tea, shall we?

[ Peregrine regards him with some exhaustion but none of the discontent from before. That's probably a good sign. ]

Yeah- yeah, that sounds like a good idea, sure. [ ... ] Uh, thanks.

[ She's so distracted thinking about it. Now they've gone so far as to trick their senses. ]

[She stays there, still for a few moments, just listening, her eyes closed. It’s almost like she’s asleep, and then she speaks.]

And I wasn’t hallucinating.

[ she sits -- close enough to touch, but keeping to herself unless farrah reaches out. ]

Mm. I'd like to meet her.

It's okay. [ He pats her on the back, gently. ] You don't have to be anything else, right now.

[ She thinks for a moment of asking him not to leave.

But, she holds that back. Because...in a way, she understands begging them this, it doesn't help. Later, regardless—she'll still wish she did. ]

Yeah.

[ She hesitates. But, she still answers. ]

I'll stay.

But... but you're so strong, Elsa. I... I woulda never though someone like you would...

[Oh god his head hurts so much it's hard to think. He's just going to put his head in his hands for a bit.

[employeeoftheyear]

[That gets a genuine laugh out of him, and a smile.]

You're just saying that, Maya! I've only been a sibling for a month. I would hardly say I'm "the best".

[employeeoftheyear]

I.. I know.

[He's quiet, for a moment.]

... Eurydice, thank you for everything you've done. I'm sorry I haven't been there for you as much.

[ Orpheus nods in understanding. He may not have any step-siblings or blood siblings that he's aware of, but. ]

Sometimes being good to your family can be really hard. Even if you're acting with the best of intentions, or you're doing what you think is right for them.

[ He thinks of working, working, working endlessly on a song that he thought would save everyone but almost doomed Eurydice instead. ]

And sometimes you just can't or don't do either of those things, for whatever reason. But you care, and you try, and I think that counts for a lot.

Oh, okay! Do you need help with the mattress, do you think?

[ Because Orpheus really doesn't want him straining himself, though he guesses a mattress weighs less than what Angus was lifting before, even if it is more unwieldy. ]

Oh, that's a good idea. I wouldn't have been able to convince Lord Hades to free Eurydice without Lady Persephone's help.

[ Although that probably has more to do with Persephone being Hades's wife and just about the only person in the world he listens to, than them both being gods. Still, though. ]

And there is that, too. So we might have options? Depending on how we get out, and what help we can find.

[She thinks back. To her hazy memories of Corona. To the damage its suffered... The damage she's caused.]

[Maybe it's just a hopeful dream. Maybe with their worlds flipped upside down, they can actually do something about it. Who knows.]

...Yeah. Now that I look back on it, most of it wasn't my fault completely. Or hers. We were just... kids, put in the same house, at a really weird time in her life. And then my life got really weird.

[She glances back at the sunshine outside.]

She'd be really angry with me about today, too. I can just imagine her yelling at me. But I think sometimes she yelled, because she cared.

I wish I knew for sure, but... I have a good feeling. It's not going to stay this hopeless. Like I said, the wind is changing.
