Week Five

[Last week, you had your very first minor body pileup! Granted, the Balladeer's death was entirely unrelated to anything, but at least he died as he lived - getting completely fucked up in some kind of carnival-themed hellscape. Only two days later, another terrible accident took Rina and Varian both from you. It's just been one of those weeks, huh? At least you got to add both of their corpses to your weird growing collection!

Again, you'll wake up this morning with another new snippet of memory. You'll also find that the stairs in the lobby are no longer blocked. You can only access one part of the second floor, but it seems like there's some neat stuff up there!

Outside, a few things seem to have changed. For one, the weather has turned - it'll be overcast this week, with periodic rain and even scattered thunderstorms. For another, the bushes around that rock out by the football field have bloomed. That's nice.

Of course. [he'll move to unbutton his cuffs and roll up his sleeves, then, and get to cutting apples]

What sort of apples does the recipe call for?

Tart apples. ...I think 'cause there's already sugar...? [ She grimaces. ] I gotta be real, even when mom said she messed up a recipe, I'd just eat it. I don't really know what other people think tastes bad.

[ she is...a garbage disposal. ]

The tart apples make sense, considering the sugar. Baking isn't as forgiving as cooking, I think, but worse come to worst, we can simply try again.

How do I know if it's bad?

I happen to have a bit of a refined palette when it comes to sweets, so I'll be more than happy to assist.

Well! Peregrine's never let anything like nerves stop her before! She steels herself. She was already taking this seriously! But now she's taking it extra seriously. ]

Then I just won't screw up. [ Filled with just a comical amount of determination, she's gonna start breaking some eggs. ]

I believe you. [he'll just keep slicing those apples] Your determination is rather admirable. [he's teasing, a bit, but also there's some sincerity there]

[ She is trying very hard not to pout right now. Peregrine Wells does not pout. ]

Well, I didn’t realize I was dealing with a cake expert here. [ … ] Besides, like… No one ever really celebrated Connor’s birthday before. Even if he’s not…here, I wanna give it my all.

[he's about to open his mouth to tease her again--"cake expert," really now--

but then she goes on to mention Connor, and that quiets him]

...to be fair, I'm sure that Connor would've been very appreciative of any cake that you'd made, no matter the quality.

...I don't really wanna assume anything about him. Seems like he had enough of that, back home.

[ Peregrine's jaw tightens. He may be able to see that, as she so diligently continues to add and mix the wet ingredients. ]

Partly. But it's mostly just more...salt in the wound. He never— [ ... ] I didn't like the way he talked about his family. I don't think they ever really...tried to understand him, or listen to him.

They just...thought he wasn't trying hard enough. Thought if he just did a little more, worked out or found the right hobby, it'd make him less...angry. Less depressed. Normal.
