Week Four

[Last week, Gershwin High School Academy University saw its very first intentional murder! What a milestone! And right after Spongebob's No Murder party, too - that doesn't seem like it bodes very well for anybody's future.

You all wake up this morning with yet another new memory returned to you. You'll also find that the school's external doors have now unlocked. Congratulations! You're free! Unfortunately, you also seem to be entirely in the middle of nowhere. So maybe it's more of a symbolic victory.

Still, you should look around and do some investigation! Maybe you'll find a fun surprise.]

[ Cool, cool. Orpheus will look for a lock or some kind of mechanism to draw it up, as well as lying down on the floor to try to get a look at what's up the stairs through the metal grill, but under the assumption that that proves fruitless he'll turn his attention to the cafeteria.

First thing's first!! Looking underneath and at the underside of every single gods damned table in there. Any scratches or marks or messages? Or is it just chewed gum all the way down? ]

Varian feels his heart stop for a moment when Rina holds the amber up. He can see his reflection slightly in it from here, even though it's all lumpy and twisted. It's maybe even a bit sharp in a few places.

He thought...he had the only...]

...Rina- you need to get rid of that.

[He says it quickly, his voice clipped. The honorific is forgotten for the time being.]

[ She giggles. ] Hehee, yeah.

[ Though sorry Ayumu, she's pressing skip. She'll give this song a proper listen later. Afterwards an even more upbeat song starts to play.

...That's definitely Kasumi-san.

[ Yeah she's. Pressing skip. Immediately. SORRY KASUMI BUT YOU'RE TOO CUTE... YOU COULD BE COMPETITION. The other song afterwards is significantly more mellow and elegant.

And that's Shizuku-san...

They're both in the same grade as me - Kasumi-san wants to be the cutest idol in the universe and Shizuku-san is also in the drama club and wants to become an actress.

I'd say the three of us get along pretty well... being the youngest members and all. Kasumi-san even calls us "Shizuko" and "Rinako".

[Seems like just a weirdly strong door! It's made of wood, and resembles the others in the school in basically every way other than - presumably? - its durability.]

[Said in a tone implying he should 100% make a habit out of it. But, off they go, then.]

[He'll get an annoyed noise from Salieri, who maybe almost gets hit in the head with a chair]

Cut that out! [snapped] I know you won't sustain any brain damage if you get hit with a flying chair due to there being nothing up there but hot air, but I, for one, would very much like to avoid such an injury!

[He is going to be gently turning the chairs over to look, and then setting them back down].

I think it's got a little bit of a better depth and richness to its sound. I can play something for you now, if you'd like?

[ He seems sort of eager to, actually. He's just been reunited with an old, albeit inanimate friend - of course he wants to see if it's still in good shape. ]

[Maya goes to pick the pillow up. Everyone needs a pillow, right? She doesn't quite expect what waits below but.... she can't say she's surprised, either.]

I'm glad you are planning on staying with us. You need not worry about sleeping like this any more.

Maybe a chair to the head would be helpful. Knock all those pesky lost memories back into place.

I climbed anything I could. And I did dance, and then cheer in high school. They try and teach you how to safely fall in both of those, but it doesn’t always work out. [She tries not to think of the fall— of the bleachers full of people, laughing—-


She snaps back into reality.]

But— thank you. It’s really nice. Actually, I’ve been meaning to show you something! Wait here one sec, okay? [Before Elsa can even respond, she’s turning—- oh, brr, her knees are cold, she better walk instead of run over to the bleachers, to pick up the big ol’ tote she’s been carrying around as a purse.

She pats the bleachers beside her, so she doesn’t have to return to Elsa’s side.] Come take a look!

[She’s got.... the photo that features B, Elsa’s sister, B again(?) and... That’s just Hans in a mustache. Even Farrah can tell that.]

[There's no visible mechanism to raise it! Lying on the ground, you can see a bit more, but it kinda just looks like another school hallway up there.

In the cafeteria, there's no chewed gum! There's nothing much else there, either. No carvings here!]

[Farrah scoops it up quickly, holding it behind her back in a way that is definitely not knife-safety hour.]

Yeah. Well. It’s good to keep nearby, just in case.

But I think I’ll probably wake up screaming less. I sleep better, with people around.

[He isn't really...intending to, not yet, but it is sort via instinct that he starts to almost reach for it, like he's going to grab the amber out of her hand. He stops just short, his hand balling into a fist.]

Just- trust me, it's bad. You need to throw it away as soon as possible, do you understand?

I think they're also called peccaries? They're like pigs [ he gestures to the piglet in Elle's lap, just in case she's... somehow from a world without those? ] but they're wild and live in the desert. Usually they don't like people very much, but they'll come and listen to me sometimes.

[ What he means to say is that they're aggressive and have zero fear of people, but you know. He draws the song he's playing to a close and takes a moment to stroke the chicken in his lap's feathery back. ]

Do you run into many animals, back home? I know I've seen you with a dog a couple of times. Is he yours?

[ After everything last night, Peregrine had refused to leave Janis' side. They're supposed to keep each other safe, after all, right? So, she spent the night in Broadhurst, pushing Connor's empty bed up against Maya's and going from there.

Peregrine had never held someone else while sleeping before. Sometimes, when they were little kids, she and Jacob would huddle together during really bad storms, before she'd stopped being afraid of the thunder and the lightning, before she'd become a big kid. Sometimes, they'd both curl up with mom and dad (and then just mom, but that was for movie nights, not comfort, because she was old enough to sleep alone and take care of herself she thought) and fall asleep in the wee hours of the morning.

But it wasn't the same— it wasn't deliberately curling up with someone, holding them as they cry or fall asleep, making the conscious decision to be here. Be present.

So, that's how they wake up and that's how the day continues. Peregrine and Maya are here for Janis. Quite literally, on either side of her. Just days ago, it was Peregrine in the middle of this. Now, she's on the outside, holding Janis' hand in a girlfriend sandwich. Even if she doesn't know what to say right now, because every platitude feels false and hollow. She's there. ]

[Underneath a couple of the chairs, you can find things like Hello? or HEY.]

[Maya's lips press into a thin, almost angry line.]

You know, this is hardly in line with our contract.

[ Well at least we're all civilized humans(/sponges/drakonequi/lumpy spacers) who can dispose of gum properly here. Or maybe we just don't have any gum. Anyway, it's time to check out the vending machines. They're plugged in, right? Even the weird opaque one? ]

...I see. Well, at least you might have a cup of tea and some breakfast before setting off for your plans? [eyebrow arch]
