Week Four

[Last week, Gershwin High School Academy University saw its very first intentional murder! What a milestone! And right after Spongebob's No Murder party, too - that doesn't seem like it bodes very well for anybody's future.

You all wake up this morning with yet another new memory returned to you. You'll also find that the school's external doors have now unlocked. Congratulations! You're free! Unfortunately, you also seem to be entirely in the middle of nowhere. So maybe it's more of a symbolic victory.

Still, you should look around and do some investigation! Maybe you'll find a fun surprise.]

[He's silent for a long moment. Almost long enough that she would be forgiven for assuming he somehow didn't hear her.]

...My daughter. Johanna. She was only a year old, when...

[He takes a deep breath of fresh air and holds it in his chest.]

Last week I remembered when she was born. Holding her for the first time, holding her every night in my arms. Her skin was as soft and smooth as ripe peaches. She had little curls of blonde hair, nearly white, and she smiled like an angel... Lucy teased me. Said I was spoiling her. But how could I live with myself, if I didn't hold her every second I could?

I couldn't believe that something so perfect could be mine.

[Creepy guy fits the description, particularly when it comes to trapping people and telling them to kill each other. They were in an opera house. So was this the Phantom of legend?]

But who was the man I met with this mask, living in the opera house?

[Sure, there's wind! Just a light breeze, probably.]

[I mean. Between those two options, it sure looks a lot more grave-like.]

[Farrah’s just gonna try and kind of. kick at it. Knock up some dirt. Because that’s always a good thing to do.]

[ Wind, but the animals are...frozen, so to speak. If she looks for other animals, will she find them? Something in the underbrush, like a rabbit, a squirrel, something? ]

[Okay! Luckily, nothing happens!

It's sort of oblong in shape? Not quite a neatly rectangular sort of thing, you know.]

[You might have to look for a little, but you can spot the shape of a rabbit in the underbrush!]

[ EXCELLENT okay well! She doesn't have any traps for it, but she's not really hunting, is she? What she wants to see is if it'll run off if she gets close. ]

[When kicking it doesn’t work, Farrah does the only thing that her impulse driven brain can do. She drops down onto her hands and knees and starts trying to dig it up like a dog with her bare hands.]

If this isn’t buried treasure, I’m gonna be super fucking pissed—-

Varian doesn't say anything. He just lets Rina hold him, looking across the room over her shoulder as she sings softly into his ear. From where he's positioned, he can see the offrenda he built from here, staring back at him with mementos of everyone who had died so far.

He closes his eyes, hoping Rina won't feel the tears he's going to definitely be quietly crying into her shoulder. Probably until exhaustion overtakes him and he falls asleep once more.]

Oh...nah, it's fine. I appreciate the thought.

[He kicks at a clump of dirt.]

Not sure Dad would've gotten it anyway...he's always so busy with other stuff.

Yeah. I get how that one goes. [She blows an exaggerated puff of air out of her mouth, then winds her arm around his, tugging him closer to her side.]

I’ve got an idea. Want to find something to give Salieri, here? It’s a little late, but he won’t mind. I don’t think he knew about it either.

Investigation!

[Well, one of the first things you might notice is that...there's no poisonous plants here. All of this stuff is safe for humans! Maybe that's normal for a regular person's garden, but for a murdergame...?]

Something...to give him?

[Oh. That's...

He relaxes, smiling a little with his arm looped in Farrah's.]

I like that idea, but what?

[ She can feel them, but that's fine. She just continues to hold him, moving so that she can stroke his hair a little bit. She'll stay quiet and just... keep holding him.

She's here and she's got you. Like Ai-san and the others had her. ]

[YEAH THAT'S WEIRD ALRIGHT...

Varian kneels down among the plants, examining this or that as he lets his gloves shield him from any potential poison, only to find that the leaves wouldn't have harmed him anyway. Never mind whatever else could be out here.]

Hm. Aren't the woods at least supposed to have like...poison ivy?

[He murmurs to himself as he stands back up, brushing dirt off his knees.

So the garden greenery is safe, at least he doesn't have to worry about Ruddiger eating something weird. Does it all seem well tended to, or is it overgrown?]

[ She runs her fingers over the letter as she glances back down at it. ]

...It'd be better if it wasn't all the way out here, but... I don't really expect them to have our best interests in mind.

[ It isn't bitter or cutting like usual. It's like the fire inside her is out. ]

You remembered something else, right? Like the rest of us. But... worse. [ From the sound of it. Orpheus frowns, and edges just a little closer. ] It's okay to need help, sometimes. If anyone would understand, it's the rest of us here? We're all going through a lot.

[ She places it in his palm. ]

It's...from Connor. His coins. He said... He left them to you.

[The rabbit does not move!

Which is probably ideal, because when she gets close, Peregrine can notice that this is just a realistic fake rabbit. It’s got fur and everything, but this is noooot a real animal.]

[ She pokes it. ]

...It's fake.

[ She starts feeling the trees more carefully. Are they also fake? ]

Yeah! Since—- he’s the closest thing we’ve got, here. He’s always making sure we’re safe, giving advice and keeping us from getting into too much trouble. It seems nice to celebrate him. [She’s beaming again, pleased he’s agreeing with her.]

I don’t know. We could try and cook or bake something, but I’m kindof sloppy in that. Do we have anything else cool we can make him, that he’d like?

[ Okay, time to check up on the boy! The stuff with Benjamin earlier has him a little spooked, but it's taken care of now and she hasn't seen Varian this morning so time to hunt him down.

When she comes in she's wearing the electronic face board instead of using the paper one. ]

[The woods might, but not in the garden!

And yes, this does all seem tended to. The flowerbeds are neat, there's no visible weeds, and the big central tree looks to have fresh fertilizer around its base.]
