[Once Salieri leads him out of the trial room, Varian carefully parts ways with him. He doesn't say why, but is still thankful that Salieri doesn't ask. He probably knows that he'll come around eventually, but...Varian is gone for so long that it might actually be concerning. He had no intentions of skipping the meeting after the trial, but he also couldn't face anyone immediately after, either. He needed to be alone.

And where anyone looking for him will find him is Broadhurst. The door is left ajar because he hadn't thought to try to close it behind him, the desk drawer open and a few papers from inside scattered on the floor. He has one in his lap propped up against his yearbook, pressing down so hard with every mark he makes that it's sure to scar the outside of the book. Ruddiger is nearby, hiding beneath the desk and peering out fearfully at Varian because of course he doesn't know what's going on. Varian just came barging in here and tearing apart the place looking for paper.

Eventually though, the flurry of activity ceases as he jams a pin into the paper, and then right into the wall. The corner.

It's a diagram for a future project, one to be completed before all else. It looks to be a mock-up of an Emperor Penguin standing with its head bowed towards its feet, dimensions and various measurements written down off the top of his head for what will someday soon be a memorial. Along with the Penguin is a bough of roses around its neck, possibly also intended to me made of metal or wood, to represent the Empress who had lost her life equally cruelly today.

While looking up at what he'd put together, Varian feels the last walls he'd put up to hold back his emotions tremble before finally bursting open wide. He falls forward, arms bracketed around his head on the floor. He weeps, bitterly.

Eventually Varian will join the others. Probably by way of someone encouraging him to leave the dorm, more likely than not. He has Ruddiger with him, who is wrapped around his neck protectively and occasionally rubbing his cheek against Varian's as he sits somewhere in the cafeteria, looking at the minute scuffs and scrapes on the surface of his gloves.]
